Schiphol Moderate price hotel ?

We have planned a 5 week Europe vacation ending at Schiphol airport in mid-June. Thought we might stay at/near Schiphol
for a few days to return rental car and take the train into Amsterdam for a day. Unfortunately the 3 hotels at the airport are
very expensive ($250-$300 a day!) Has anyone stayed a a more moderately priced hotel within a 15 min shuttle ride to
the terminal?

My other concern is the long wait line to pass through security. Some have suggested the wait line can be longer than 3 hours!
Has anyone departed Schipol recently, departing on United to the U.S. ? How long did it take to get to your gate?
Our flight leaves at 11 am, what time should we be at the airport?
Thanks

Don't stay at the Amsterdam Airport Hilton. You've already seen that they are expensive, but that is the tip of the iceberg. They nickel and dime you for every little thing.

I have heard good things about the Citizen M hotel which is just a short walk out the main entrance of the airport.

My sister stayed at Hampton Inn which off site but does have a shuttle. It can also be reached by public transport.

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Ibis Amsterdam Airport. It's moderately priced, decent breakfast, and has a free shuttle to the airport. It's basic and there's no restaurant, but the Hotel Ibis Styles Amsterdam Airport is just across the parking lot and they do have a restaurant/bar if you need a bite to eat in the evening. We just took the shuttle to the airport to access public transportation to just about anywhere. Just beware that the shuttle can be crowded at peak times, so get there in line early for the next one.

This was last summer at the height of the Schiphol meltdown due to staffing shortages etc. Things are better now but unsure what they will be in June. There is a webpage on the official Schiphol Airport website that shows expected crowds and traffic.

Here's another page of FAQs.

In any event I always plan to be at an airport 3 hours ahead of departure when it's an international flight. I'd follow that first link for about 2 weeks before your travel time to see if any problems are building and then adjust to more time if needed.

There are two nice but expensive airport hotels located adjacent to the Schipol airport, the Sheraton and the Hilton.
We stayed one night at the Hilton and were able to walk from the terminal to our hotel. It was about $260 per night, but very nice.

We did the one night because we had a 32 hour break in our flight to Nairobi for a safari. We didn't want to do back to back 9 hour flights.

Yes, you can find cheaper lodging in Amsterdam, but if you take a taxi into the city that will cost you about $50 each way.

There may be a moderately priced hotel with a shuttle, but you would need to check TripAdvisor.com or other such websites.

We stayed at the Citizen M at Schiphol Airport and it was just fine. It is not fancy but very modern and a decent price considering that is is so close to the airport. It is a short walk to the terminal. We spent one night there as we had a 24 hour layover from our flight from Africa back to the US.

I have also stayed at the Citizen M airport - very modern and yes pricey - but there's not much to do there and they have a pretty minimal food menu. Since you have several days I would choose to stay in city center - return the rental car at the airport (or city center if there is a place to do so), take the train in to Amsterdam Central Station (15 minute ride) and find a central hotel (search this site, plenty of suggestions for locations). As Pam noted there is a helpful planner on the airport website to determine how much time you need to get through security/etc. on a given day and there are plenty of trains to get you to airport even in the early morning. Hopefully it won't be horrible like last summer, but it's best to give yourself plenty of cushion.

By the way, I wasn't totally sure about your plans for dropping off the rental car from your initial post, but wanted to make one comment just in case. When you arrive in Amsterdam, be sure to immediately ditch the car at the airport or other suburban location. Driving in Amsterdam is a nightmare of cars, bicycles, and trolleys coming at you from various directions. After driving in downtown Houston, LA, San Francisco, Brussels, and Paris, I can honestly say that Amsterdam was the most frightening driving experience of my life.

There is a compromise to an airport hotel. Between Amsterdam Centraal station and the airport, is Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, and within a block or so are maybe a dozen hotels, including a Holiday Inn Express, a Mercure, a Park Inn by Radisson, and several European chains, most going for around 100 euro or less a night.

There are frequent trains directly to the airport, dropping you off right in the terminal, in 20-25 minutes. Of course also frequent trains into central Amsterdam, just a few minutes away.

For an inexpensive place, look at the Moxy Amsterdam Schiphol Airport ... haven't stayed here but planning to in mid-April ... has good reviews, free shuttle to/from the airport (10 min ride), breakfast (extra charge) ... looks kinda different (quirky as one reviewer said) but who cares if you're really only there to sleep, shower and change for the next days' adventures.

Disregard if you don't care to deal with CC points.

Maybe there isn't time to maker it work, but if you are a points grinder open a Best Western credit card, spend minimum, pay it off, and collect bonus points, book Best Western near Schipol with points.

a) Best Western Rewards® Premium Mastercard® ($89 annual fee): Earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in your first three billing cycles after account is open; earn another 40,000 bonus points when you spend at least $5,000 during each 12 billing cycle period.

b) Best Western Rewards® Mastercard® (no annual fee): Earn 40,000 bonus when you spend $1,000 in the first three billing cycles after the account is open; earn another 20,000 points when you spend $5,000 every 12 billing cycles.

A couple of years back I went for option A and same for my wife. Collected about 260k BW points in a year then closed cards. Can't remember if closed before or after annual fee. So in for maximum $200 cash and temporary diversion of normal spending.

Rooms in the two BW hotels near Schipol are 20-24k points per night, at this point available mid-June. They have airport shuttles.

BW Hotels in Europe are generally quite a bit nicer than in the USA.

I don't grind points as much as I did when budgets were tighter, nowadays just use them for lie flat seats on the way from USA to Europe. But did this BW points grind because we had a few Netherlands trips on the radar, and there are a lot of BW hotels in the Netherlands. We got about 10 room nights out of it.

Alternatively, you surely know that AMS is a rail hub? It's a good sized train station right underneath the airport terminal. You could stay in charming Central Utrecht for instance and be at the airport by train direct in 30 minutes, or at Amsterdam Centraal in about the same. Or stay in Amsterdam, Leiden etc with similar frequent, direct, and fast train service to the Airport. You're not pinned to staying at Schipol to have a convenient departure day.

For example if you want a modern hotel here's one from the Radisson group, under $150 a night in June, convenient to train in Utrecht:

I was also going to recommend staying at Sloterdijk. It's one stop from Centraal station (five minutes), and just a couple of stops to the airport. It's a ton cheaper than either the airport or in town. I stayed at the Mercure one night in January and it was perfect for my needs.

In addition to the mainline trains into Amsterdam, you can also take the metro, or a tram combo . . .
