The Boijmans van Beuningen museum is currently undergoing major renovations and rebuilding and it will take many years before it will reopen.
In the meantime some of the artworks are on display in the Depot of the museum. The Depot is the first art storage that can be accessed by the general public. I’ve visited twice already and I find it very interesting.
The main purpose of the Depot is to store the art in special climate conditions. The great thing about Depot is that some of these climate controlled rooms have a huge window, allowing the public to look in and see the art works. Other works of art are on display in the viewing rooms of Depot. These rooms are just like a regular museum with the art works hanging on the wall. However, since Depot is not a museum but an art storage, there are only a few rooms with art on display. This means that only a few paintings are on open display. The other paintings are in the climate controlled rooms. These rooms cannot be accessed by the general public. When you take a tour, you visit one of these rooms but the Depot staff decide which one.
The status “in Depot” means that the artwork is somewhere in the Depot, either in one of the climate controlled rooms or on display.
I hope that my rather lengthy explanation is clear. If not, please don’t hesitate to ask!
