I will be in Amsterdam on Friday September 25 and plan to visit the Rijksmuseum. Is it recommended to get tickets ahead of time? It looks like you have to select an actual time for your visit, and I was hoping to not have to be that specific. What has been peoples experience?

I bought my tickets in advance. I was allowed in about 15 prior to scheduled time.

We got our tickets ahead of time and were there on time. I think there was a 15 minute window. If it’s crowded, like when we were there, I doubt they will be too flexible as they seemed a bit cranky with people who were in a different time spot….but who knows. Good luck.

Alas, these days it is definitely recommended to pre-purchase an advance ticket for a specific time slot if you wish to visit the Rijksmuseum while in. Amsterdam. I don't think walk-up visitors have much luck these days.
It is a drag to lose the flexibility / spontaneity -- but worth it to be able to experience the beautiful art.

As I type this it’s 8 am in Amsterdam and when I just checked the website of the Rijksmuseum, there are still plenty of tickets available for today. So right now, during the busy summer holidays, you can buy same day tickets. Even for the popular time slots early in the morning.
Compared to the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank house, the Rijksmuseum is huge and can accommodate much more visitors comfortably. Unless there is some blockbuster exhibit about Vermeer or Rembrandt, you don’t need to buy tickets weeks or months in advance. You can buy them the day before or a couple of days in advance if that makes you feel better.

Even with timed tickets, the museum can be very crowded, especially in the popular Hall
of Honors. Try to go early morning or later in the day.
