Recommendations for day trip from Amsterdam to Zuiderzeemuseum and a cheese market

On one of our day trips from Amsterdam in May 2022, we were hoping to visit the Zuiderzeemuseum and Enkhuizen. We also would like to stop on the way in either Alkmaar or Edam to visit a cheese market. We are planning on using public transport. Is that too much to do in one day and which of the cheese markets would you recommend?

On Wednesday mornings Edam still has their cheese market. It is a fun morning with a world wind of activity - cheese being carried in, weighed, inspected, tasted, etc. they even have a small band playing, kinda like their equivalent to a German Oompah Band. Everyone is in traditional dress, right down to their wooden shoes, we took the Local Bus there, it was a short ride. The market is from 10:30-12:30. Look under Holland.com and localbus.nl. We didn’t make it to your other two destinations so I can’t comment.

Edam is an adorable little town. Really old. Mini Amsterdam. Catch the 316 bus out of Centraal Station. Edam is the end of the line.
If you have time, catch the same bus and stop off at my little town, Volendam. Old fishing village. Lovely harbor with lots of restaurants. Everything in brick. Houses, streets, sidewalks. Nothing higher than 3 stories.
PM me if you want more information.

Is the Waterland bus pass still available? A few years ago we bought it for about 10€ In Amsterdam and spent a fun day riding around. We visited Edam and Volendam among others. Very convenient. Safe travels.

Denny, Their website is still up so I am assuming it is still running. Kateja, We loved Volendam. The small museum is very interesting and as was the cigar band house.

As far as visiting the Zuiderseemuseum in the same day, they currently show hours of closing at 5 pm, and the outdoor museum will reopen in April. No idea if they extend the opening hours in the summer. As such, it takes one hour to get from Edam to Enkhuizen, with a bus to Hoorn, then change to a train the rest of the way. If you want at least 3 hours at the Zuiderseemuseum, you need to leave the cheese market by noon, considering walk to the bus and walk to the museum on the other end. Take a closer look when you get to April. It is a direct train back to Amsterdam Centraal from Enkhuizen.
