Wow, Rotterdam seems to be a polarizing city - especially among the Dutch! When I was visiting Amsterdam in winter 2022, however, I became fascinated with the architecture and the Depot Boijmans van Beuningen (https://www.boijmans.nl/en/depot) but never made it over. It's not only an art museum - it's a museum on how museums store, transport, and restore art! I'll be in Belgium late in the summer, arriving in Brussels and departing Antwerp.
Is Rotterdam worthy of a day trip? Or even an overnight?
It is as a gateway to Kinderdijk! Highly recommended.
Rotterdam is well worth a day or two, either as a daytrip or overnight. It has some great architecture (post-war modern) some decent museums, and is a pretty vibrant city.
It is not however what most go to the Netherlands and Belgium to see, so it gets sold short. Seeing that it is a successful metropolis not overrun with tourists, maybe the city fathers were wise to build anew after WW2 (You would probably be amazed how many "ancient" buildings are post war reconstructions). Whether it appeals to you depends much on your interests.
it has nice vibe good train connections; the North Sea Jazz Fest one of the largest and prestigious well attended musical festivals in the world for grown folks is held there the 2nd week of July. Also last month I took boat to Kinderdijk from there. From the train station to the Erasmus bridge, it has some interesting new architecture.
We were staying in Delft. We took the train to Rotterdam, the tram to Erasmus Bridge, watertaxi to Kinderdijk. Such a wonderful adventure; and those windmills; gorgeous!
Definitely a great day trip - or two-day trip. It’s such an interesting contrast to the rest of “tourist” Netherlands. I spent one very wet day there. Looked at the market hall, visited the cube houses and then a slightly dull boat trip around the docks (visibility was really poor due to weather.)
I want to go back and visit some of the museums and spend more time enjoying the modern architecture... hopefully in better weather.
I probably wouldn’t stay there as I like to go to the Netherlands for canal-strolling and the vibe of places like Leiden and Utrecht. But it’s an extremely interesting city. I like that it’s an easy train ride from Delft (indeed, from everywhere).
It’s a lot like Hamburg, in that it’s sprawling and quite difficult to cope with unless you’ve worked out where you want to go - and of course the waterfront.
In my experience if you have to ask whether or not something is worth it, it probably isn’t worth it to you.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Rotterdam and I think it has much more to offer than it gets credit for on this forum. The Depot of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum is just one of those things that I love about Rotterdam.
However it isn’t an easy city, like Delft for instance, with beautiful historical buildings and canals everywhere you look. In order to truly appreciate Rotterdam and all the great things it has to offer you need to make an effort and prepare well.
@Dutchtraveler That's exactly _why I was asking for advice, though. Not that I'm not convinced Rotterdam is worth a visit or not but more because of the lack of information out there in English! Personally, I love less touristy cities. I much prefer Osaka to Tokyo, Dresden to Berlin, Philadelphia to much of the rest of the US East Coast. I spent a week in Amsterdam in January 2022 and I'll also get my fill of canals and historical buildings in Bruges this trip, so that's not an itch I necessarily need to scratch in the Netherlands too.
I’m sorry but to me it wasn’t clear that you were asking for information about what to see and do in Rotterdam. Perhaps it’s because English isn’t my first language, but to me “Is X worth a visit” is a totally different question from “What is there to see and do in X?”
If I’m honest, I still don’t know what it is you’re asking. Do you want more information about Rotterdam?
