I plan to visit Amsterdam for the first time in Spring 2025. I will not have a car and I will be out exploring during the day and will be in by 10pm most nights. I'm interested in being within walking distance or public transportation to shopping, restaurants, and live music venues (informal without requirements to sit in a seat but where dancing is permitted) I'm assuming Dam Square is the best area for that? I am looking for a neighborhood to choose from my Home Exchange network where it will be safe, fairly quiet at night, and within walking distance or close to public transportation to downtown. What neighborhoods can you recommend?
Thank you!

Canal Ring
Jordaan neighborhood, on the canals, west of Dam Square.
We enjoyed the Nadia Hotel, on a canal, close to the Anne Frank House. Rooms are small, but not a problem.
Another vote for the Jordaan.
Really any neighborhood you choose in the canal ring will have great access to public transport, restraurants, shops, and venues. They'll all be very walkable as well. You wouldn't want a car in central Amsterdam.
Noise level will vary by neighborhood. Around the Dam will be noisier. Jordaan is quiet at night.
I stayed in the Jordaan at Herengracht 21. Loved every minute of my stay there. Didn't want to leave. Caught the Undertones at Paradiso.
