Looking for recommendations for a private guide with vehicle for Amsterdam. I will be there with my wife and a friend (three of us) in early May 2023. Thanks
Is there a specific reason you want to have a guide with a car? Do you have mobility issues? I ask this because a car in Amsterdam isn’t very practical, quite the opposite really. The historical city center is compact and walkable with lots of pedestrianised streets. If you get around by car, you will miss the most beautiful part of the city.
What are some of the things you want to see and do in Amsterdam?
I don't have serious mobility issues, but hours of walking doesn't work for me. But walking with a number of stops for coffee, lunch, etc. would work for me. Also, I understand it is the time of the tulips. We would like to see them.
Are you asking for a guide to take you to the tulips, which are well outside of the city of Amsterdam? Or do you want a guide to show you the sights of Amsterdam? Or both?
Please understand that I’m not trying to be nosy, but the more details you provide, the better we can help you.
Like I wrote in my previous post, the city center of Amsterdam is very compact and walkable. You can very easily guide yourself. That way you can take a break whenever you want, there are plenty of great cafes, restaurants etc to stop for a cup of coffee. There are plenty of self guided walks available, for example the walks by Rick Steves.
I first visited Amsterdam in 1982 and then in 2022 with my wife, who had not been there.
On our latest trip we spent a week, staying in a small hotel near the Anne Frank House that was great for walking around the city.
We are in our mid-70s but walked all over the city, including a walk for two separate days to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum that were about 1.5 miles from our hotel.
First, you don't need a guide in Amsterdam, buy a guidebook with a map and do it yourself. Get a Rick Steves guide or a DK Eyewitness Guide. You can take a canal cruise if you like that was fun.
Second, Amsterdam is not a car friendly city. Parking is a serious pain in the rear. There is a trolley system that you might consider using, but if you stay in the downtown area, you don't need it.
