Pricetime tickets - what does route mean?

Hoping to get some clarification on NS pricetime tickets. Once I pick a window say 10:00 - 15:00, which trains are eligible for me to select? The website says it has to be on the same route. What does route mean here, is it just the start and end points or the path to reach the end point.

For example, if my ticket is from A to B, there may be a few options on the journey planner:

  1. A to B direct
  2. A to B via X
  3. A to B via Z

Does it restrict which one I can take to get to B? And does it matter whether its a sprinter or an intercity type train (as long as its not a IC direct)?

I think the Pricetime tickets are fairly new.

It might help us to answer your questions if we could see the information you've found on the ns.nl website. What are your origin, destination and travel date?

For example.

Wed 26/2 Leiden Centraal to Utrecht Centraal

https://www.ns.nl/en/journeyplanner/#/?vertrek=Leiden%20Centraal&vertrektype=treinstation&aankomst=Utrecht%20Centraal&aankomsttype=treinstation&type=vertrek&tijd=2026-02-26T13:30&firstMileModality=PUBLIC_TRANSPORT&lastMileModality=PUBLIC_TRANSPORT&disabledTransportModalities=BUS,METRO,TRAM,FERRY

  1. Sprinter train 13:23 via Leiden Lammenschans
  2. Intercity train 13:27 via airport
  3. Sprinter + Intercity train 13:32 via Den Haag

All different paths.

Thank you. That additional information was helpful.

I am not an expert on Dutch trains, so I really hope someone else can step in to provide certainty.

I tried selecting both the direct option and a couple of the options requiring connections, and the follow-up screens showed the same "Order Overview", just specifying the origin and destination. I suspect you'd be OK taking any of the listed departures for which PriceTime tickets are available within the travel window specified on the follow-up screen. However, the website info isn't totally clear to me, either.

What you might consider doing is selecting the departure you currently prefer, buying the ticket, and then inquiring at the first practical train station. There should be no problem getting clarity there, because the Dutch speak excellent English. Odds are you'll find out you do have the desired flexibility. If not, you'll know ahead of time which train you must take. In event of a serious scheduling conflict, you could just buy a new, full-fare ticket.

You could also use the chat function on this webpage: https://www.ns.nl/en/service-and-contact

Thank you for posting this question. When I saw an occasional PriceTime offer last year, I assumed I had to take the specific train I chose, so I never took advantage of the discount.
