Places to stay in West (Jordaan) Amsterdam or Southern Canal belt Amsterdam

We have been researching areas to stay and found two places. One on VRBO and the other on Airbnb. One in the Jordaan (west) and one in the south canal area. What suggestions, insights might you have on B & B options or hotels? Some of the more affordable places in Ricks book are no longer in business. I'm looking for places and locations that you feel are good choices for (2) travelers, 5 days who want to sleep well, ride bikes and walk around to enjoy the sights. Budget would be under $140 per night and if possible include breakfast.
Thanks for your help

We will be in Amsterdam May 8-12, 2019. We will be back in Amsterdam to return home for one night before going to the airport on May 28.

hey rita
we've been to amsterdam twice, once in the jordaan area on a houseboat and another time on prinsengracht near amstel canal in an apartment. loved both areas. it's an expensive place and crowded, watch out for bikes coming and going! when you find something you like book it.

citymundo.com
houseboatrental.nl
houseboathotel.nl
read the reviews, look at pictures closely, steep stairs to climb with luggage, room but share bathroom kitchen and living space (not my cup of tea). your budget is low, of you have a small kitchen you can buy food and drinks at a grocery store, put in fridge and eat when you want.
is this your first visit? if interested i can message you with ideas of things we did. waiting to hear and if questions about places to stay.
aloha

Neither of these are in the Jordaan, but with your budget requirement, I'd check either Hotel d'Amsterdam or Conscious Hotels.

Conscious Hotels has several locations around the city. I stayed at their one near Museumplein and it was a great location to get around both by foot or bike. They have a fleet of their own hotel bikes they keep on site (additional fee, but low). While they serve breakfast, it is extra - I didn't find it necessary as there were multiple restaurants, cafes and bakeries nearby, as well as an Albert Heijn grocery store. A perk Conscious Hotels has at several of their locations was a free evening wine hour where they also serve up light snacks. Conscious Hotels has more modern (but basic) decor - but hotel room and the bathroom in it were really large - plus hotel had an elevator to avoid having to cart luggage up the often narrow and steep staircases in Amsterdam.

Hotel d'Amsterdam is run by a local family and is very close to Leidseplein. Also similarly well located for foot or bike travels and access to many sights, restaurants, etc. While my room was very big, the bathroom was fairly compact (no tub, just a shower, toilet and small pedestal sink), but it did come with a mini fridge which was nice for stocking drinks or snacks. They also had an elevator about the size of a phone booth, but great for getting your luggage to and from the room.

Both hotels are easily accessible to/from the airport by public bus (takes a little longer, but cheaper than the train and you avoid having to transfer to a crowded tram or take a taxi from Centraal with your luggage as the airport bus stop is less than a 5 minute walk from each hotel).

We stayed at the Hotel Chasse SW of the canal rings. It is in a quiet location near excellent transportation options and Foodhallen. The hotel has large rooms. It may be a bit above your budget, but wasn’t when I stayed there last year. I’d definitely go back there.

We went this past spring and successfully used VRBO for a party of four for 3 days
Looked at a number of homes including houseboats.
Ended up in Zandaam and would take the train into Amsterdam.
In any case, when you find something, go ahead and book because it is the busiest time of year.
Would use VRBO again.

Have you checked Pricelines Name your Own Price tool? You can select area, stars, and your rate per night, and then you may get an offer. Ive been able to get some good deals with it. Though, some showed to be not cheaper then on another site. There is a lot of info in the internet on how to take advantage of the Priceline bidding system, but im not sure im allowed to link them here. So just do a quick google search, it should yield some interesting results :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, they were helpful. I found some great places on VRBO but the owner tells me it's too early to book their place. I'm guessing they may be waiting to see if they can get longer rentals, than 4 days, or haven't set pricing yet for 2019.

Thanks Again for the help

I am hoping the person who replied earlier and mentioned staying in Zandaam will see this and respond. We are also looking at several Air BnB and VRBP options for next May, and are wondering about the travel times into the main Amsterdam attractions when staying outside the city. How long did the commute into City Center or to some of the musuems (say, Dutch Resistance Museum, which is on the south side of the city) take you from Zandaam?

From Zaandam ( mind the spelling ! ) you take the train to Centraal Station via Sloterdijk station . From Zaandam to Sloterdijk Station takes 6 minutes . Get out of the train at Sloterdijk . Wait about 5 minutes and get on train from Sloterdijk to Centraal Station . That ride takes 6 minutes . Costs 3.80 euro p/p. During rush hour there are some direct trains to C.S.
