Visiting Amsterdam for two days in mid-October and looking for some good photo location tips. Not much on street/people scenes per se. Love landscapes, architecture, colors. Traveling light - probably one full-frame body and one wide lens. Any thoughts? Tips? Suggestions? Warnings? - Thanks!
I loved taking photos of the canals and bridges in Amsterdam. Take a canal boat tour as photos of the buildings (especially the 'dancing' bldgs) from the water are wonderful. Outdoor markets are always a good photo op. When I was in Amsterdam the first time I was walking a back street and came across a couple of those 'statue people' street performers that were taking a break, all dressed up in their statue costumes/makeup smoking cigs and drinking Heinekens - best shot I took on that trip. I've gotten a lot of good architecture shots in European cities by always looking up, so many unique features are on the upper part of buildings.
There's not much landscape. The only "hills" are the bridges that cross the canals. You may want to take a half-day tour out of the city. There's the touristy cheese and fishing village one. As long as you get back to the bus in time, you can wander on your own for a good part of it. The only other suggestion is to get up really early for photos in the early light before the city comes to life. Take a tripod if you want some of the lovely night scenes, with all the illuminated bridges/canals.
Curious about what lenses you are taking. We start our 21 day RS tour in Amsterdam. I have a crop sensor Canon, though. I, for one am excited to catch the tulips at Keukenof but it will not be open on October. I think the architecture around the canals will be very good photo ops.
Fletcher,
You will love Amsterdam - it is a photographers dream city! Don't , however, even take your cameras with you if you visit the Red Light area!
