Four of us will have a car to visit destinations in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. However, while in Amsterdam, a car does not seem necessary at all. Any advice on where to park outside of Amsterdam for four days in mid-September? Hoping for a location that allows us to get on transit into and out of the central city easily. Thank you.
Perhaps there are extended off site (less pricey) parking lots near Schiphol Airport. Or it looks like there are 24 hour lots in Haarlem, near the train station. It's is such a quaint, charming town, so a good excuse to visit, and a short train ride into Amsterdam.
The first place that would spring to mind is Sloterdijk. It's right off the A10 freeway and it's a short trip into Amsterdam on the train. There's many business-orientated hotels that you can check for on-site parking availability.
You can look for P + R parkings around Amsterdam. For more info see this website: https://www.amsterdam.nl/en/parking/park-ride/
There's quite a few parking garages I can see in Sloterdijk if you wanted to leave a car there without being tied to a hotel out there. It's maybe too business-y for four nights stay.
If you're feeling braver, look for parking around Museumplein. I'm sure there's some parking garages there too. That puts you in a place that's an easy walk or tram ride to lodgings somewhere nice / fun in the centre. That's still just off the main A10 ring road.
The closer to the city center the more (horribly) expensive. There are also so called Mobihubs, but you have to combine it with renting a bicycle. And not shure those parkings allow long term parking. Always worth asking for more info the place you are staying, with a bit of luck they know a good solution.
What does your complete itinerary look like? Are you sure you even need a car? And do you really need it after Amsterdam? Wouldn’t it be easier to just hand your car in when you arrive in Amsterdam?
Park at the train station.
At 45 EUR/day, the parking garage near Amsterdam Centraal (Oosterdokseland) would come under the "Horribly Expensive" category in my book. Parking at the station is 60 EUR/day. ParkBee by Sloterdijk is 20 EUR/day.
Some years ago, I drove a small four-door into Amsterdam for our hotel and car turn-in. It was a nightmare of curvy one-lane streets, doubled-parked tradesman's vans blocking most of one travel lane, one-way segments, and confusing signals and turns. It was excruciating, and took much longer than any form of public transit. It was much worse than driving in Antwerp or Paris, which I also hope to never do again. You have the right idea!
(I drive in Manhattan NYC twice a week.)
