We have an overnight layover in schipol. We are staying at the airport hotel. We have the afternoon and evening to explore. Any recommendations on where to go? Haarlem, delft, Gouda or any other place? Looking for a smaller town than Amsterdam. Thanks !

I think Haarlem makes the most sense. Easy to get to AMS via train or bus and loads to see and do in Haarlem.

I would recommend Leiden. Leiden is only a direct 17 minute train ride away from Schiphol Airport and is a lovely historical city with canals, great museums and several windmills right in the city center.
Btw; when you use public transport planners etc, please be aware that the name of the airport is Schiphol, not Schipol.

If you are into museums: the Mauritshuis in Den Haag. Vermeer's Girl with pearl earring & Delft City View, Rembrants, etc. Easy train from Schipol station and short walk to museum.
