Orange Day

We are thinking we will be in Amsterdam on April 27, Orange Day. Is that something to avoid or should we participate in the festivities. We are NOT party folks.

Take my advice and AVOID Amsterdam at all costs on King's Day! I didn't and was very sorry. I'm not a party person either but I was curious. Spent the entire day in my room. It took hours for me to walk thru the crowds to get to my hotel. And then the music was blasting from dj's on literally EVERY corner. No... believe me... you do NOT want to be in Amsterdam on April 27. Or the day after.
People in my hotel couldn't even get out at night to get something to eat... we were literally trapped. April 27 of last year was my first day in Amsterdam and I hated it. I went back a few weeks later and went from hating the city to loving it. Everyone told me ahead of time NOT to go to Amsterdam on that day. I should have listened.

I can understand the confusion, but our national holiday is called Kingsday not Orangeday.
There is absolutely no need to avoid Amsterdam on Kingsday. It can be very crowded in some parts, but these can be avoided. It can be a fun experience to join in the festivities of our national holiday. Just make sure you wear something orange and a smile!
If you want to avoid the festivities, you can easily do so. Museums like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum etc are all open on Kingsday.

there is no need to avoid Amsterdam on Kings Day. I was there in Amsterdam on Kings Day a few years ago. I put on my orange shirt and set out walking at 9:00 am from my hotel. The streets in the central ring were shut down or diverted, so walking was a breeze. For the first hour, there was barely anybody outside. It wasn't until 10 am that people brought out their items for sale on blankets in the street. Only around noon, did the city become crowded - and then only in the areas that were hosting events. The ferry across the river was crowded and Dam square was crowded. Around 2 pm, the canals in the Jordaan were full of boats with revelers all wearing orange. Quite a party scene. But other than that, it was not wall to wall people. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in the crowd size. I thought it would be like Times Square on New Years eve in New York or Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach throughout the city. But it wasn't that crowded. And in the event areas where there were crowds, the people were respectful. It wasn't a mad house.
I wouldn't avoid Amsterdam for fear of crowds. Put on a orange shirt and enjoy the festivities.
