We arrive at 5:30 AM this Sunday at AMS and want to stay one night at a convenient location to get back to airport the next morning and also be able to enjoy the Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum and an evening in Amsterdam. We have been to the city before but this is just a layover on our way to Italy. Any suggestions for getting from and to airport and for a hotel? I wasn't planning this as part of our Italy trip so I don't have a Rick Steves book for the Netherlands. Thanks!
The train between Schipohol and Amsterdam Centraal takes only 16-18 minutes and run about 4x/hour, so staying on either end can work. There are many larger hotels near train station, with Ibis being one popular brand. Take a city tram from there to the museums.
There is train service from the airport to Centraal Station around the clock. For just one night consider the Ibis Hotel next door to Centraal Station, or the Double Tree Hotel across the tram/bus plaza. Everything else in the city is easily accessible via foot or tram. Trams 2 or 5 will take you direct to the Rijks/Van Gough from Centraal. You can purchase an unlimited 24 hour pass on board the tram.
