Northeast Holland

We like to travel off the beaten path.

Is there anything "really" worth seeing in the northeast of Holland around Leeuwarden, Groningen, and Emmen that can't be seen elsewhere?

To be technically accurate, that isn't Holland, which refers only to the two most well-known provinces of the Netherlands. The cities you mentioned are in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, respectively.

But back to the original question... it's always risky to recommend a place you haven't yourself visited, but I had a trip planned to the Wadden Islands that unfortunately I needed to cancel at the last minute. The pictures looked beautiful. These aren't so much destinations you visit to explore the "sites", but places where you go to escape and relax.
