Nijmegen Tours

We will be stopping in Nijmegen on a river cruise. I have looked on the forum and have googled WWII tours or any type of local tour and have found nothing.

There is a short walking tour available through the ship, but we are interested in other options.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for your help.

I was able to walk the town without a tour easily. The Waalbrug bridge itself was very impressive and easily walked, and Hunnerpark on the south end where a lot of the battle took place with the 82nd airborne was also an easy walk from my hotel. You can also walk along the waterfront on the south shore where there are several restaurants with impressive views of the river, boats, and the bridges.

BATTLEGROUND EUROPE series has a history/guidebook on Nijmegen. Title is “Nijmegen: 82nd Airborne and Guards Armored Division” by Tim Saunders. I have used this series to poke around back country of Normandie involved in Operation Bluecoat. Available on Amazon. Brief and easy to follow.

Phil is right, you can get around the town for much of the immediate battleground. Lots to see in that general area related to MARKET GARDEN and well worth your time.

Having enough time you can visit the Freedom Museum / Vrijheidsmuseum south-east of Nijmegen. The Airborne Museum at Hartenstein in Oosterbeek west of Arnhem and a little museum near the John Frost bridge in Arnhem, where is a memorial too (but not at the same spot). My visit long ago was at the time the museum in Oosterbeek was the only one about Market Garden and in the meanwhile got a serious update, so no idea how interesting the others are. Think those in Oosterbeek and near Nijmegen are the most interesting as far as I can see, but think others can tell more.

Thank you everyone. This information is very helpful. I wasn't having luck finding this information myself.
