I don't think there is any definite date yet for completion, but you can see it while it is being restored.
Yeah, it is kind of interesting seeing them restoring it in the open. You can still get a good look at it, they keep it in full view.
However, you are some distance away from it (15-20 ft?), I recall a couple decades or more ago being almost nose to nose with the painting, but I suspect those days are long gone.
It's a painstaking slow process to remove varnish that will probably take years. Not sure there is much different to report than when you asked in November (there are links to the project in that post). https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/netherlands/rijksmuseum-night-watch-restoration
Thanks CL for the link. As said in the post of last November, the precise date the restotation will be finished is hard to predict. Using the most modern techniques there wil become much more to the surface than ever before. Much can only be studied as noticed without the varnish, so much is unknown yet.
I have followed the restoration of the Altarpiece in the St. Bavo’s cathedral in Ghent from the beginning. It’s a comparable project in size and complexity using much of the same techniques. There was a time table just outside the exhibition room showing the final date of the restoration. Several times the planning needed an update and so the final date years posponed.
I was there this past August. They are not close to done.
