Can anyone provide any information regarding the New-West area of Amsterdam? I have Rick Steves' Amsterdam book and it is not even mentioned. ( I had already reserved at a hotel in that area before purchasing Rick Steves' book and now have seen a few comments regarding 'safety' in that area and also being away from the city center).
Amsterdam New-West is quite a large area. Depending on where you’re hotel is located you can be relatively close to the museum district or quite far away. So it would help to know in which hotel you’re staying.
Thanks for the quick reply. We are staying at Corendon New-West.
Any update on this follow-up please?
It's some way out of the centre but you've got a Metro station nearby which will let you get into the centre easily. No idea about safety but there are very few genuinely rough areas in Amsterdam and I haven't heard of that as one.
It’s not unsafe, but it’s not the nicest area of Amsterdam in terms of surroundings. You’ll be surrounded by offices etc. It’s also quite far away from the historical city center. The good news is that public transport into Amsterdam is right on the doorstep of your hotel.
Less than two years ago, while staying in central Amsterdam, we went to a Georgian restaurant for dinner, which is a short walk from the hotel you have chosen. It is easy to get there by metro/subway or tram. We did not find the area “unsafe.” It just lacks the charm of Amsterdam’s historical center.
