Thanks Pam, the new building looks amazing. I am curious if they kept an interactive art exhibit that was at the prior location. It was donated by Montana artist Willem Volkersz who grew up in Amsterdam and left at the beginning of WWII. His piece features 172 wooden suitcases with the names of children from his elementary school that died during the holocaust. I recently heard Mr. Volkersz give a lecture on his life work, and his description of this piece was most sobering and fascinating.
Thanks for sharing this article
Oh my, CL. That is an astonishing and poignant story. Perhaps there will be more to the website once they get the museum open.
Estimated Prophet, you are welcome. I’m not planning on Amsterdam this year but it’s always good to have new museums on the radar screen.
The official opening of the new National Holocaust museum is on Sunday March 10, 2024. On that day, the museum is only open to those who are invited for the opening ceremonies.
From March 11 onwards, regular visitors can visit the museum.
Just to avoid confusion and manage expectations of what might be on display; this is a brand new museum. It’s not a remodeling or renovation of an existing museum.
Thanks, Pam! Wonderful article! Amsterdam "does" museums so well, and this one has such an important message. I look forward to visiting there in the near future!

Bingo! I've added this to my list. Thanks for the info.
The existing holocaust memorial at the Hollandsche Schouwburg is still open and within walking distance of the new museum. I'm wondering if this will reduce the overcrowding at the Anne Frank House or if people will visit both.
