I’ll be in Amsterdam in mid April to see the Vermeer exhibit with a day trip to The Hague. Will I be able to see tulip fields from the train between Amsterdam and The Hague? I’d rather spend my extra half day visiting Delft than Keukenhof. If I can see the fields from the train that will be enough for me.
I don’t know the answer to your question, but having gone to Keukenhof last April I can say that seeing tulip fields from a moving train is nothing like seeing them up close unless you have no real interest in flowers.
Mid April is just a bit on the early side for the tulips in the fields to bloom. Depending on whether or not we have an early spring, you may to able to see some tulips from the train. But you can’t compare the small glimpses you can catch from a train to the immersive experience you will get when you visit the Keukenhof.
I can't make the decision for you. It's true that it can take some time to get to and from Keukenhof (which has a view of some commercial bulb fields over the fence, from inside Keukenhof.) But let's make sure you understand that Keukenhof is a heavily landscaped and cultivated public garden, with more bulbs than perennials, although it has both.
Because your visit is the middle of Keukenhof's season, you are (mother nature permitting) absolutely guaranteed to see a thousand tulips at Keukenhof, but in display beds, not a "farming" situation. Try to go on a weekday, when it's a little less crowded, if you go.
the bulb fields are not visible from the Amsterdam Centraal - Amsterdam Sloterdijk - Schiphol - Leiden - Den Haag route, although there may be a few north of Leiden.
On the other hand, the line from Amsterdam Centraal - Amsterdam Sloterdijk - Haarlem - and several stops to Leiden (passing by but not stopping at LIsse which is where Keujenhof is located - and through Den Haag passes between many bulb fields on both sides of the train - sit upstairs - from south of Haarlem all the way until just before Leiden.
Thanks so much! That’s exactly the info I needed.
