I am looking for suggestions for a 4 days itinerary around Amsterdam.
I and my husband prefer countryside/quaint villages, picturesque areas with good food, cafes and some night life.
We will be reaching 31st Aug afternoon and leaving 4th evening.
We have been to Amsterdam couple of years back for 2 days. So it is ikat if we don't spend much time there.
Would love to hear about places to visit, good places to eat and what to eat (we are foodies 😊) and what to see and do.
Thanks in advance.
As a former important port town Enkhuizen is not really a village, but being so small will give you a village feel. One hour by half-hourly train from Amsterdam. On the way back (20 mins from Enkhuizen) you can get off in larger and equally historical Hoorn, which I suppose will have better eating facilities.
Another easily reached and no less picturesque small city is Naarden, a 20-min walk from the railway station Naarden-Bussum. Its late-17th-century defense works are still intact. It will have decent eating opportunities.
For the classical Dutch landscape I find nothing beats the area north of Amsterdam. Weather permitting a nice day out in an endless sea of green is to take the train to Alkmaar, change to a bus to Schermerhorn, walk a 2,5 to 3 km to Grootschermer, where you can pick up the next bus to De Rijp. De Rijp is as »quaint« a village as you can get in this region. Regular busses bring you to Purmerend (no reason to linger), where you can pick up a train to Amsterdam.
Closer to Amsterdam, you can take a bus at the Centraal Station to Broek in Waterland, from where you can walk a same 2,5 to 3 km along the canal to Monnickendam, which is another beauty. If my memory serves me well, there are half-hourly busses back to Amsterdam.
Essential tools are the public transport planner 9292 and the amazingly detailed and accurate OpenStreetMap.
