Need suggestions for one more stop in Netherlands (in addition to Leiden and Amsterdam)

Hi all,
We are traveling to the Netherlands in April, and I have two of our stops planned: Leiden for a few days to see the tulips and University there, and then will end the trip in Amsterdam for a few days.

I have two nights in between to fill and am looking for recommendations of where to go. I was thinking somewhere a little more rural with some nature. We would love to see a castle, maybe get out near a park for a walk and see some of the countryside. Not super far from Amsterdam if possible.

We have 3 kids (15, 13, and 8) hence the castles and walking. :) Was looking at some of the smaller towns east and north of Utrecht, but am open to any suggestions!

Thank you!

When exactly in April will you be here? I ask because it’s a very busy time with various holidays. What you can see and do depends on your exact dates.

Can you share how many nights each in Leiden and Amsterdam? How many nights do you have total for your trip?

Do you mean you already have Keukenhof Gardens on the itinerary? Are you taking train daytrips already? Do you insist on a third hotel?

There are vast amounts of urban walking necessary in Amsterdam & Leiden. Are you saying you want to hike in woods and meadows?

We will be there from 12 April- 21 April, 2024. I have definitely noticed things are booking up quickly! I have all else booked except 2 nights (16-18 April).

And we have 3 nights in Leiden, and 3 in Amsterdam. So have these 2 left to decide. I’ve traveled within the Netherlands before, but not with kids. I love the Kroller muller museum, but we already have many museums planned and wasn’t sure if there was a good place with some nature, walking, and castles where the kids can see more of the countryside.

I really appreciate any ideas!

Hi Tim,
Yes we have the entire area around Leiden covered! We will have a car.

And was looking for some nature walks or just green spaces easy for the kids to explore. (we will do plenty of city walking too!)

The Kröller-Müller museum is located in National Park De Hoge Veluwe, so of course you can do plenty of hiking and see plenty of nature.
For more information about NP De Hoge Veluwe, see here; https://www.hogeveluwe.nl/en

There are various castles in the Netherlands, but not the Disney-like white ones with towers built on top of a mountain.
See here for a list of the most impressive ones

Thank you dutch_traveler! I have that list already (that official tourism site has been very helpful). Do you have any towns you would recommend specifically as a home base? Ty!

I just noticed you plan to have a car. What does your exact itinerary look like? You really do not need and certainly do not want a car in Amsterdam and you probably don’t need one in Leiden too. Where will you be staying?

We will drop off the car before heading back into Amsterdam. We live in NYC and are used to city driving (and paying for the parking), and already have a hotel and car parking reservation in Leiden. We are taking trips to the tulips, Delft, and the Hague. Then seeing Kinderjik on the way to our next destination (wherever that ends up!) before ending in Amsterdam.

We’ve been to the Netherlands twice. We’re returning in May to take a cruise to Norway. We’re staying in Rotterdam. Easy train rides to other cities. 30 minute boat ride to Kinderdijk windmills.
