There have been past discussions on this but I wasn't able to find an answer to this question... We are considering getting a temporary Museumkaart which would get us entry into 5 museums. We would most likely use it for Rembrandt house, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Our lord in the attic, and arnhem open air museum. Buying tickets at these museums would be 107E, while the Museumkaart is 75E. Our first stop where we would buy our pass would be rembrandt house or our lord in the attic. We would reserve timeslots ahead of time for vangogh and rijksmusem by selecting that we have a museumkaart. We would save about 22E per person (88E for our group of 4), is it worth the hassle? Just wondering if anyone has used a temporary pass recently to save a little money and it worked out great? Is it seamless and easy to use or are there additional lines we would have to get in? My thinking is, if it's easy, why not save us the 88E. But also, it's only 88E... would I be wishing I had just purchased rijksmuseum & van gogh when I reserved the time and then bought other tickets as I go? Hoping to reserve time slots soon for our April trip. Thanks in advance.
I haven't done this, but just a note that Van Gogh museum has a joint exhibition going on until June 9 in conjunction with the Stedelijk Museum that requires paying an additional surcharge (whether or not you have a pass). On the up side the surcharge gets you in to both museums. Anyway, you'll want to add that in to your price considerations.
My understanding is that it is for residents and you must have an address in the Netherlands.
KD- to clarify. Tourists can buy a temporary Museumkaart pass at museums that will allow entry to 5 museums that accept it. Beyond that, you would have to register it with a netherlands address.
In response to KD, what I read several places is consistent with what the OP writes -- that only residents can purchase it online and eventually get a permanent card good for a full year but visitors are invited to purchase a temporary card in person as the OP descrives and use it for up to 5 museum visits in 31 days. It sounds like it would be worth it especially for 4 people. I did not try it when I traveled because I (mistakenly, I think) thought that I wouldn't be able to reserve Anne Frank and Van Gogh tickets in advance without the card number and because the savings for just one person was not that much.

The above link explains the differences between a temporary (31 day card) and a full card ( annual, only for locals.)
Enjoy this wonderful country. Safe travels!
Good clarification! Thanks!
