Has anyone gone to the Museum Willet-Holthuysen? If so, did you need to make a reservation? Did you enjoy the museum? Was it near anything else I should visit? Thanks for all your help.
We went last June and we enjoyed it. It was not a trip or even Amsterdam, highlight, but it was nice to get inside one of the canal mansions and worth the time if you are spending over three days in Amsterdam.
I don't know if they take reservations but I doubt very much that you will need one. During our tour we saw perhaps seven other tourists in the house.
You might find the Cromhouthuis on the Herengracht more impressive: www.cromhouthuis.nl/en
Willet-Holthuysen is a few minutes from the Hermitage Amsterdam museum. At the moment it houses the semi-permanent exhibition of those typical huge group portraits of militias and directors of charitable institutions: http://portraitgalleryofthegoldenage.com/
Thank you both for all the information. My time in Amsterdam is really shaping up. And thank you for telling me about the Cromhuthuis museum. That is the kind of places I am looking for. Thanks a lot!
Yes, I have been. Was part of the Museumkaart. No, you do not need a reservation. There aren't a whole lot of tourists clamoring to get into these small historic canal homes, so there are never any lines and no need to purchase advance tickets. Just show up whenever you are in the area during their open hours. Willet has a great garden out back.
The Tassenmuseum is not too far from there if you want to see that. Excellent place to visit if you like fashion/accessories - lot of very old purses and vintage stuff to look at there.
Thank you everyone! Great info! Yes, it is on my list to see the museum of bags and purses!
