Looking for most scenic train ride from Amsterdam
We'll be visiting Amsterdam in May & are looking for suggestions of the most scenic train ride from there. It can be a few hours from A'dam, so long as we return to town for the night. Any ideas? Been to Antwerp & Brussels before, looking for a new destination. We love the outdoors & nature :)
Thanks!
Personally I like the train trip from Amsterdam to Hoorn, which becomes endless green after Purmerend. Hoorn is a beautiful city with a glorious past as one of the founding fathers of the Dutch East India Company.
Another good area are the former Hansa cities along the IJssel river: Kampen, Zwolle, Deventer and - perhaps the best one - Zutphen. With the help of this OpenStreetMap you could even walk from Zutphen to Deventer (or vice versa).
Closer to Amsterdam are Weesp and especially Naarden, a wonderfully preserved 17th century fortified town. It's a pleasure to walk the small roads and paths between them. Both are easily reached by train. For Naarden you need the station Naarden-Bussum, which is a 20-minute walk from Naarden proper.
