I like shopping at crate and barrel in Vancouver/ USA. When entering " designer furniture amsterdam", tons of lists, perhaps the locals can share your insights on few top shops/stores for us.

Looking at the website of Crate and Barrel, it look likes what the Dutch call a "woonwinkel". There is also something called a "woonboulevard" where all sorts of woonwinkels (usually chains or larger shops) are located.
Woonboulevard Utrecht: http://www.woonboulevardutrecht.com/plattegrond/ This is very easy to reach by tram from Utrecht Centraal station. Translation: Keukens / Badkamers [Kitchen / Bathrooms], (tuin)Meubels [(garden) furniture], Slaapkamers [Bed rooms], Woninginrichting [home furnishings], Woonwarenhuizen [home store], Diversen (o.a. horeca) [miscellaneous (eg restaurants)]

If you're also interested in just looking, rather than buying, you could visit the Schroeder House, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, in Utrecht - it's now a museum.
