Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis

Did anyone who has been to the Mauritshuis in The Hague also see the traveling exhibit "Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis" either in New York at the Frick or in Bologna? I don't know where else it was mounted, but the exhibit included "Girl with a Pearl Earring", "The Gold Finch", and several other well-known paintings. I saw it in Bologna in 2014, but I think it was at the Frick before then.

I am asking because I'm trying to decide if I should make a day trip from Amsterdam to see the Mauritshuis itself. If you saw that exhibit and also visited the Mauritshuis, I would like to know if you thought the Mauritshuis was worth your time even though you had already seen its greatest hits elsewhere.

Thanks.

I did not see that traveling exhibit but visited the Mauritshuis last August. It is a gem like the Frick. I highly recommend a trip there. You will also see Vermeer’s “ View of Delft”, Rembrandt’s
“Anatomy Lesson”, beautiful building, the Royal Collection, small but filled with treasures. When you leave, walk through the adjacent Dutch Parliament grounds and more. The Hague is a wonderful place to visit and next time we visit The Netherlands, we will spend a few nights there.
Easy well signed walk to Maritshaus from the train station.

The Mauritshuis is a gem. Small, but nearly everything is of top quality. For a few euros extra you can have a combined ticket with the William V Gallery, a few hundred metres from the Mauritshuis.
If you are in Amsterdam before 27th May: the Hermitage has a temporary exhibition of Dutch masterpieces from their St Petersburg »parents«, which haven't been back home for a very long time. Look at their website.
And from 8th March the Rijksmuseum has a temporary exhibition of masterpieces of portrait painting, among which Rembrandt's Marten and Oopjen, which has been bought a few years ago from the Rothschildt family for a sum which is better not mentioned.

Yes, go to the Mauritshuis even if you've already seen the exhibit in Bologna. I assume the Bologna exhibit was jammed when you were there. I've always found the Mauritshuis delightfully empty compared to the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum. Because of its size, you won't be overwhelmed, but you are seeing some of the very best Dutch masters anywhere.

I saw both. I don't know about the precise comparative square footage, but don't remember the Mauritshuis as a "vestpocket" museum like, say, the Frick or The Wallace Collection. It has plenty to see. Many oversize works (like "The Bull", "The Anatomy Lesson .. ") and panel paintings don't travel much. There is another important art museum in The Hague, The Gemeentmuseum, which is vast and also worthwhile. The Frick exhibition all fit in one or two galleries, so it was a microscopic selection of the Mauritshuis collection.

Boy, did I get some great replies! The Frick and the Wallace Collection are two of my all-time favorite museums. If people compare the Mauritshuis to them, then it's definitely on my list!

Thanks.

Not only did I like the museum itself, the historic center of Den Haag is lovely. Go!
