Marriott Amsterdam

My husband and I (able bodied seniors) will be in Geneva and Amsterdam in mid-October. We would like to stay in the Museum Quarter in Amsterdam. My husband has a good number of Marriott points, so we thought we would use them to stay at the Marriott in the Museum Quarter.

However, after reading many reviews on several different websites, it doesn’t sound so good. Does anyone have any knowledge of this Marriott? If it isn’t so good, could you please suggest some hotels near or convenient to the museums, preferably ca. $200 per night or under? Thank you very much.

I think you'll find the average price for a moderate hotel in Amsterdam to cost about 400 euros, ( compounded with the weak USD. ) This is according to Cameron Hewitt, RS travel writer.
Perhaps see if there's a Marriott in one of the charming surrounding towns, such as Haarlem or Leiden.
Have a great trip!.

“ think you'll find the average price for a moderate hotel in Amsterdam to cost about 400 euros, ( compounded with the weak USD. ) This is according to Cameron Hewitt, RS travel writer.”

I’ve seen this claim mentioned several times on this forum. I don’t know how Cameron Hewitt came to this conclusion. Unless he specifically stated that this was only during the peak of the tulip season, it simply isn’t true.
The yearly HOSTA report showed in September 2024 that the average price of a hotel room in Amsterdam was €206 per night. This was a slight increase from 2023 when the average price was €205 per night. The HOSTA study does show that hotel prices in Amsterdam are higher compared to the rest of the country, but you don’t need to pay €400 for a moderate hotel room.

I haven’t stayed there myself, but I see that this hotel has a 4.3/5 review score. It’s location is hard to beat as it’s ideally located to both the museums and the Canal Zone. I’m not sure why this wouldn’t sound good to you. Can you elaborate on your concerns?

Thank you, Pat and Dutch_traveler, for your kind help. I know the location is excellent for our plans, but many people complained about dirty sheets and duvets, unclean bathrooms with hairs in the drain, dust, broken showers, room never cleaned and told they must reserve that, then still not cleaned, etc.— poor maintenance in general. I can deal with nasty staff, slow check-in, broken coffee maker, etc., but not a dirty room.

To be fair, some people had good experiences, but so many complained about similar problems. The reason why you choose a brand name hotel is because you expect a certain standard and this one doesn’t seem to meet it.

I stayed at the Owl Hotel which is a much cheaper 3 star hotel with fewer amenities but basically same location. It is behind the Marriott on a smaller street. I am surprised to see that the Owl has a higher rating on Booking.com. This seems to be in part because guests find the Owl good value for its price whereas some of the complaints about the Marriott are about disappointing facilities and service given its price. If you are using points and not looking for luxury, the Marriott might end up being a good deal given prices in Amsterdam. The Owl was fine for me. The location is really good for museums, restaurants, walking most places or taking trams. If you do public transportation, there is a bus from the airport that stops right in front of the Marriott.

Hi, CD,

I’m a fellow CD. Thank you for your reply. I will check out the Owl. We will be staying in Amsterdam first for one night after we arrive, then flying to Geneva for two days to see a friend, then returning to Amsterdam for another four nights. We will probably give the Marriott a try for the one night and if it’s not awful, maybe we’ll stay for the other four nights. Fingers crossed. It’s good to have alternatives, so thanks again and I will definitely check out the Owl.

Stayed at that Marriott in May of 2023 and in July of 2024. A great spot. Absolutely no issues with the hotel, the service, the location, or the breakfast. We'll surely stay there again.

Park Centraal might also be hotel that would work. We stayed there in November of 2023 and really liked it. Location great for museums and tram to Dam Square.

I was just at the Marriott Amsterdam in July for 3 nights and loved every thing about the hotel. Nice clean room, air conditioning (it was very hot while I was there), excellent breakfast for club members, I sent out laundry and it was perfect. I recommend it. We used points too and it was perfect. Good location. easy access to museums, etc. and easy access to Tram. I highly recommend taking a canal tour with Bow's Journey. some on ricks steves calls it captain jacks, but the name has changed. https://www.bowsjourneys.com/

Just got back from Amsterdam and that Marriott museum quarter hotel is in a perfect spot for Tram2 that'll get you down to Amsterdam central and most of the sites in the city. It's within walking distance to shops, restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes, boat canal tours is just across the street and the museums are just about a 10 min walk. Lots and lots of people walking around all the time, so it's as safe as you can find. If you have lots of luggage, consider taking a BOLT (EU version of a cheaper UBER) from the airport to the hotel. Yeah you can lug all your luggage to the train and then get the tram at Central Station, but no thanks it's not worth it for us when we're exhausted. The hotel is located almost in the middle of all the action in a really nice area
. The hotel itself, it's a hotel. Some will love it and some will have a bad experience. Hard to say what your experience will be. Just go...

Dear Miguel,

Thank you so much for your wonderful reply. I’m very glad to hear your experience. Yes, we are definitely going in a few weeks. So happy to be going. I was there in 1973, but I do remember many great things. My husband only worked in The Netherlands, so it will be brand new for him. We will also go to Haarlem and either The Hague or Delft. Also going to see an old friend in Geneva and stay overnight. I can’t wait. Thank you again.

@miguel - next time, coming from the airport, take the BUS that drops you right by the hotel. The Amsterdam Airport Express Bus 397 (aka Connexxion 397) runs many times per hour from the airport to downtown Amsterdam with stops at places like Leidesplein (right by Marriott) and Museumplein. Tap on, relax, tap off at Leidseplein, walk a couple hundred feet, check in.

Are you traveling from Schiphol Airport to the center of Amsterdam or vice versa? Take the bus! This is the easiest option. The Amsterdam Airport Express takes you to Museumplein, Rijksmuseum or Leidseplein without changing buses. Since the bus passes al touristic highlights, you only have a short walk to your accommodation or destination in the city center. You can take line 397 and Niteliner N97.

Hotel prices in Amsterdam are very high, as indicated by previous posters.

Forget expensive 5 star hotels.
We found a small B&B near the Anne Frank House, great location.
It is the Nadia hotel. We paid $1000 for 7 nights, had free breakfast. The room was small, the large bed took up half the space in the room, but the bath was more spacious.

You do have to go up a steep flight of stars to the hotel. Steep flights of stars are common with Amsterdam.

Dear geovagriffith,

Thank you so much for this tip. I have read good things about the Nadia. We will be using Marriott points for our stay. My husband used to travel a lot for work. We’re not getting any younger, so we thought we should use them while we can still travel. I was in Amsterdam 52 years ago and I stayed at a hotel with steep steps. Who cares when you’re young! Thanks again. We will look for the Nadia when we go to the Anne Frank House. My husband hasn’t been there.
