In planning stage for 2015 trip and just wanted info on Masstricht from anyone that has been there. Big fan of Andre Rieu and his music and concerts. Is Maastricht worth a couple days. From what I have seen from his local concertson dvd, it looks like a beautiful city and people seem so happpy and friendly.
Maastricht is a pleasant small typically Dutch town, but aside from a nice church and a couple of decent museums, there isn't a whole lot more to do. I had a nice Liege waffle from a street vendor.
Not far away is the German city of Aachen with plenty to see including Charlemagne's cathedral.
I heard there was large WWII cemetery close to Maastricht which I would like to visit. Would probably fly into AMS and train to Maastricht and then on to Frankfurt before heading south.
Tony, where you talk about is the Netherlands American Cemetry and Memorial near Margraten, some 10km east of Maastricht. There is a busstop at the entrance. As an indication, a bus ride from the railwaystation in Maastricht takes some 20min. Public bus travel info where you can select English, see: 9292.nl
I agree that Maastricht is a nice place to spend the day, but there's not enough to occupy much more than that. If you're into a little adventure, nearby there's some old mining caves that you can tour with a guide.
