Looking for restaurant recommendations near Leidseplein in Amsterdam

Usually when we've been in Amsterdam, we just wander around the "restaurant row" area and find good food. This time, however, as it happens we're arriving on February 14, Valentine's Day. Our hotel, near Vondelspark and Leidseplein, said we should have reservations for dinner, as most restaurants will be crowded that evening.

I checked a restaurant we remember enjoying when we were last there, but alas, it has been gone for some time. Does anyone have a favorite restaurant in that area at which we could make reservations? We'd like to stay close to the hotel, since we will have just arrived after the overnight trip from the US.

We enjoy most foods, but prefer fish and seafood. We're not interested in rijsttafel or Asian food. Any suggestions? Price is not a major consideration, but I suspect we'll be too tired to truly enjoy a major splurge.

What about The Seafood Bar? It looks a bit pricey, but gets great reviews. And I'm probably way out of touch with current prices in Amsterdam.

Thanks for your help.

I checked my list of places I liked in that area of Amsterdam and the only non-Indonesian or Asian restaurant Is Foodhallen, which is a market of food stalls. It has a really cool vibe, with restaurants and food trucks aplenty. I seemed to remember a few seafood/raw oyster bars.

Foodhallen is a ton of fun and has great food, but it's not a sit-down restaurant. Well, you can sit down at a communal table if you can find a space !! I was there on Saturday.

Here's a link with some photos

I thought this quote from the above page captured it:

If you are passionate foodie and enjoy eating on informal communal tables then it is probably worth a visit.

I don't know of anything around Leidseplein, but I can warn of somewhere to DEFINITELY AVOID no matter where you are in Amsterdam — a place called Pompa, where I got food poisoning on Sunday night (and when I mentioned this to the people at my hotel when checking out on Monday, they said I was the second guest to mention having gotten food poisoning at that restaurant !!!!)

Pompa is located on Willemsparkweg, which is basically the continuation of Paulus Potterstraat, just below where it intersects with Van Baerlestraat. Basically a block south of the museums and a block west of Concertgebouw. To be avoided at all costs !!!!!

Kim!! That is absolutely dreadful. Restaurant duly noted as one to avoid!

Foodhallen sounds like fun! Lots of choices and I don’t mind paying by app.

Jane, thanks for asking the question. I will not be there until April but gathering information nonetheless!

Kim, that is terrible! Not fun any time, but could be disastrous traveling.

Foodhallen sounds like fun, Jay and Kim, but I think that first night we'd rather have a sit down meal, and a bit closer to the hotel.

Roubrat, The Pantry sounds perfect! I may just have made a reservation there; I'm not sure! The reservation screen didn't want to take my phone number, but then it flashed and went back to the home page. I'll email them to make sure. At least they had available seats for that night.

Pam, I'll let you know how we like it, and what other places we might find. But we're only going to be in A-dam for 2 nights, to see the Vermeer exhibit, before we head to London. (Yay, Vermeer!)

Thanks everyone. We've been in situations where we arrived in a country worn out and hungry, but unable to find dinner. I'm becoming an advocate for booking ahead for the first evening, wherever it is we're going. It worked well for us this last year.

Update: I went back to The Pantry's website this morning, and was able to make a reservation for Feb 14. This time it took; I got an immediate confirmation.

Thank you, everyone!
