I'm flying into Amsterdam, and am giving myself two days to lie low and recover from jet lag before heading off to present at a conference in NW Germany. I'll be driving. I'd rather not go into Amsterdam with all that entails (I'll be visiting there after the conference) - just a nice place I can easily find on my way west from Schiphol Airport, easy with a rental car, to stay two nights. Or could be over the border in Germany - I just don't want to drive very far with jet lag... Something picturesque and quiet? Maybe a hotel to recommend? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Where is the conference at in Germany?
A small town called Damme, maybe one-third of the way from Osnabruck to Bremen. A very tiny dot on the map!
Your title says east, your question says west.
But west won't help for Germany.
It would be ever so helpful if you could clarify what you mean by NW Germany - it is a big place and roads to Germany go all over the Netherlands.
Without knowing any more I would suggest Utrecht or on the Arnhem border at Zeddam and 's-Heerenberg (and its lovely castle) for starters.
Kampen could fit the bill, some 1,5 hrs from Schiphol, or else nearby Zwolle, somewhat larger. Quiet historical cities and both a good base for a relaxed day trip.
If you are driving to Damme DE you will probably drive the A1. If so the castle I suggested is out of the way. Utrecht is very nice but not too far from the airport.
Thank you, Nigel and tonfromleiden.
Yes, Nigel - I mis-typed. I'm driving east from Schiphol toward Germany. I'm going to the small town of Damme, Germany, NE of Osnabruck. I will check out the cities you both suggest!
