While we are in Amsterdam this summer en route to Norway, we are going to an International Blues Festival in a place called Grolloo, which is just south of Assen. Evidently there are no hotels in Grolloo and the closest ones are already booked. We could use some help in figuring out where to stay for 2-3 nights, as well as advice about what else we might explore while in this part of the Netherlands. Thanks!

Have you tried Groningen, some 30 or 35 kilometers from Assen? A medium-sized university city with a good supply of hotels and other accommodations.
The area north of Groningen is an old landscape, slowly conquered on the sea. The website of the regional tourist information might give some ideas for day trips.
