After staying several days in Amsterdam, 3/27-4/1, we want to stay in a quieter area with less expensive accommodations for another three nights. Obviously, there are pros and cons to both Leiden and Utrecht, but which town do you think is more charming? Is there a live music scene with dancing (as in partner dancing) in either town? Might go back into Amsterdam one day, but not planning around that.

You are talking about Easter weekend, which previous posters have reported is a busy time. Have you found available accommodations? That may determine where you stay.
Perhaps do a Search here for both towns and review the input, and also read the posts under the Netherlands section here- they are both frequently discussed. They both seem to get great feedback.

Tough choice!
I've not been to the Netherlands yet and am having a tough time deciding between the two, plus Haarlem, as well. I'm going to try to visit both Leiden and Utrecht this spring, after Amsterdam. The more I learn about the country, the more I want to see! Might need to plan my return trip already...lol.
