We plan to be in Amsterdam for the King's Day festivities on 4/27/22. Do any of you have any good ideas of things not to miss that day? We actually have Guru Walk tour scheduled for that late morning, so looking forward to that, but wonder if any of you have been there for that day in the past?
Thanks so much!
Shirley
The website of the tourist info of Amsterdam has a very extensive list of ways to celebrate Kingsday like a local. https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/see-and-do/whats-on/major-events-and-celebrations/kings-day/kings-day-like-a-local
Make sure you bring orange clothing to fully blend in and join the party!
We were there for the festivities several years ago. It's just a terrific and generally good natured party that fills up the streets of Amsterdam for the day. The highlight seemed to be a parade of boats along the canals, though getting close enough to the water to be able to see anything was an adventure in itself given the mass of people.
As was mentioned, wear something orange and you'll fit right in - it's great.
Are you sure that your Guru Walk Tour will go ahead as scheduled? Especially from the late morning onwards, streets can become seriously crowded all over the city. Also you can do the best shopping on the street markets in the morning.
My recommendation to have a proper experience is to head to Vondelpark early in the morning. After that make your way onto the canals and join in on the festivities. You can't go wrong really. Wear something orange!
As mentioned above, double check to see if your planned tour is actually going to take place AND think about whether you really want to tie yourself to an organized activity on a day that’s pretty much a free-form get together with friends, friends-of-friends and what the heck everyone else too. Also the night before Kings Day is often just as raucous and fun.
Also be aware that many restaurants close or close early so plan accordingly or make reservations some place in advance
