We are two retired women planning to be in Amsterdam on April 26 2016 until April 30th. Just how crazy is this King's day celebration that is scheduled to happen on the 27th? What advice can you give for the best place to stay? In the city or outside? We prefer apartments with a modicum of quiet at night. What is the best way for us to participate in the festival and also see some of the local sights? Any help is appreciated!
King's Day eve is a bit crazy and rowdy, similar to a Mardi Gras experience. But on King's Day itself things mellow out a bit. The streets in the city center are closed to car traffic, and the entire center turns info a giant citywide street party/yard sale. The city will be packed but it will be more family friendly. Most stores and all tourist sites will be closed (except Rijks Museum and Anne Frank). No reason to fear it, best to be glass half full and enjoy a unique experience.
Thanks for your help everyone!

We were there the day before Kings day in 2014. I wished we were staying, but had to board our river cruise. It looked like it was going to be a blast. Be sure to wear orange!
