King Day in Amsterdam

We will be staying a few days before our river cruise in Amsterdam, and it turns out we will be in town for Kings Day, We have heard mixed reviews of the day long celebration from rowdy and wild, difficult to get a reservation for dinner to a fun cultural experience. Has anyone attended Kings Day in the last few years? Would you go agin? Or would you leave town for the day?

There is not one place in the Netherlands that won't be celebrating King's Day, so there's no leaving town to go to some other quiet town, unless perhaps you leave the country. I feel like you may be envisioning a particular location for King's Day. It's everywhere. Wear Orange. We arrived in the Netherlands on King's Day last year while on a Rick Steves tour. We first stopped in a charming small town for exploring and lunch; and it was party/celebration! Then we headed to Delft for the late afternoon and overnight. It was party/celebration! We were on our own for meals and managed to not starve. But if you are envisioning finding a quiet restaurant or a quiet part of the city, I don't think Amsterdam will be it! We arrived in Amsterdam a few days later. It still looked a bit like there were signs that a big celebration had just happened. You may as well just enjoy it whether by observing or joining in!

First things first; are you sure you’re in the Netherlands on Kingsday? Normally Kingsday is celebrated on April 27, but since that’s a Sunday this year, the celebrations are moved to Saturday April 26.
Yes, certain parts of Amsterdam will be extremely crowded. Other areas of the city will be less busy.
If you’re interested in flowers , Kingsday will be a perfect day to visit the Keukenhof and the bulb fields around it.

Thank you for the insight about Kings Day, and yes we will be there on Kings day celebrated Saturday 26th. Our cruise begins on Monday. I like the comment that it is a national holiday so it is celebrated throughout the Netherlands. We will take it on and enjoy the experience orange and all!
