Kinderdijk Windmills visit , Netherlands by public transportation

I'm fascinated reading about this area, and I can't find anything about getting there in the RS Guide book.
We will be in the country in April, 2024, using public transportation, carry-on luggage only, two seniors.

Is is better to visit Kinderdijk as part of a day trip to Deft ( sleeping in Leiden) ?
OR
As we leave Leiden, heading to Bruges via train, do we stop in Rotterdam and visit? I have looked at the Kinderdijk site, and I can't tell how many hours it takes for the windmills tour, or if it there's luggage storage. I also can't tell how one gets to the windmill area by public transportation.

I appreciate all the past advice as this trip planning evolves. Thanks so much!

We were staying in Leiden and took the train to Rotterdam. When we got off the train we jumped on a tram (7?) to waterfront. Got on a riverboat directly to Kinderdijk. This was all very easy go do. We loved Kinderdijk with its 19 historic windmills in their original locations.
You could also visit more of Rotterdam before or after visiting Kinderdijk. We spent half a day at Kinderdijk, lots to see.

Suki, thanks, great info, and it seems we can store luggage at the Rotterdam train station. I really appreciate your help. Safe travels!
