How practical is bicycling to the garden from central Amsterdam? We are not adverse to getting up early. Would multi-speed bikes ( 3 or 7 speed bikes) be of significant benefit? We plan to make the day of it, trying to get to the gardens early, then spend the afternoon rambling through the growing fields. I know we can get our bikes on the train as long as it's not am rush hour, so we can cut some of the distance to get back. I would appreciate any references to planning a route, etc. Thanks in advance.

I checked the distance and it'll come at some 40 kms. One way. You can cut it by getting the train to Haarlem or Heemstede first from where it's some 20-25 kms. A nice route is to follow the low-traffic so-called Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder from Cruquius (where you'll find a most impressive pumping station from the 1850s, used for this land reclamation) to Lisse. Back to Heemstede or Haarlem you can follow the narrow road along the old shipping canal Leidsevaart, which you'll find 1 km behind the Keukenhof. ViaMichelin gives the clearest directions.
Multi-speed is always useful. The terrain is totally flat, but there is the wind factor.
This is very practical here is some information:

Thanks for your replies. We will try and get one of maps that has the trail system and see what's practical. Also thinking of getting out of the city biking north on King's Day, at least after a few hours of enjoying the fun😉.
