I'm going to be doing a day trip to Haarlem from Amsterdam and we will stop in at Jopenkerk as it looks like a beautiful brewery. Wondering if anyone has had dinner there and would say it's worth staying for dinner as well. Or should we just do some tastings and look around and go somewhere else in Haarlem for dinner. We like beer but are not huge enthusiasts.
We have had dinner a few times there. Dinner is served upstairs and while they try to portray it as a bit more formal, casual attire is still okay. We find the quality as hit or miss: anywhere from outstanding to just okay. Reservations are recommended. If you are mostly interested in the beer, have a lunch or snack with their fine beer on the main level-no reservations required. It seems to be Popular with the locals for a happy hour after work.
If you are more interested in great beer, I recommend Uiltje. They have their own beer with a lot of guest taps. Smaller and more low key compared to Jopenkerk, but is just a few minutes away by foot. Hit Jopenkerk for a beer then head to Uiltje-or vice versa.
We ate there our last night in Haarlem and enjoyed it. Thought our meal was very good. Fun atmosphere as well. This was in May, we did not need a reservation, but was only 2 of us.
Can't add to specifics, but we will be there in a couple weeks and will visit both places, so maybe an update later. One place I can recommend in Amsterdam for beer is Proeflokaal Arendsnest, have been there on two trips, nice place on a canal, best thing is they have only a wide array of Dutch beer, no Belgian, German or other beer.
Paul. Thanks for the recommendation in Amsterdam. We will be "home basing" in Harrlem for a week so I would appreciate any reports back if you have time. We enjoy beer, food and taking it all in.
