Itinerary help - Amsterdam and Haarlem

Hello travel experts! My husband, two teenage children and I will be spending 4 nights in Haarlem this coming June, which gives us 3 full days to explore Amsterdam and Haarlem. It's our first time in the Netherlands and we are visiting after spending two weeks in Italy. I just booked our tickets for the Anne Frank House last night but need some help planning out the rest of our itinerary.

Day 1: arrive in Amsterdam in late afternoon, check into our B&B in Haarlem and grab dinner there
Day 2: 11:30 a.m. tickets for Anne Frank House, afternoon is open for now, then booking a 90-minute canal cruise for 5 p.m., have dinner in the Jordaan District before heading back to Haarlem
Day 3: Considering booking a countryside bike tour out of Amsterdam that starts at 9:30 a.m. It's a 4-hour tour. Do you think we'll be too wiped out after biking 18.5 miles to visit the Van Gogh Museum in the afternoon? Should we visit the museum the following morning instead?
Day 4: Just chill and explore Haarlem unless there are other towns that we must see before flying home the next day.

Thank you for your help in advance!

Mondays museums like the Frans Halsmuseum and Teylersmuseum will be closed and shops will open after 13:00. You may want to consider this is in your planning if Day 4 is a Monday.

We'll be arriving on a Tuesday so the rest of our days will be Wed - Friday, flying out Saturday. Thanks!

I love Haarlem. I’d definitely be too tired to do the Van Gogh museum after that ride. Haarlem is small so you could do that in the afternoon after your ride. Day 4 could be a full day in Amsterdam including the museum.

Buy your Anne Frank tickets right now if they are available. Tomorrow could be very different.

Thanks for your suggestion KD to head back to Haarlem after the bike ride. Was thinking we would be too tired to really appreciate the Van Gogh Museum after that 4-hour ride. I already got our Anne Frank tickets last night... stayed up till 1 a.m. to buy them right on time! I knew that was something I definitely wanted to see. Thanks!

I would definitely go to the Ten Boom Museum in Haarlem. I have done it twice it was that good. I don't remember if we had to get tickets before hand. It is also worthwhile seeing the movie about the Ten Boom family and their work during WWII. Called The Hiding Place. I seem to remember they have some tours that are not in English so be sure you get the right tickets.

Hi there, wow sounds like a fun trip! Thanks for all the details, most helpful.

Agreed, visit the Van Gogh museum the next morning, as early as possible as museums tend to fill up later in the day. I would book the tickets ahead of time.

Here are 2 recent TR's for the Netherlands if you haven't seen them? Good for ideas, especially restaurants, as you're already quite busy. Have a wonderful trip! https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/netherlands-belgium-trip-report-needed-the-sun-screen-not-the-rain-pants-for-this-2026-trip#bottom.

On the day you plan to explore Haarlem, I would recommend to go to the Dakkas (on top of a car park) with the best view over the city and surroundings from its terrace.

You may want to consider cycling through the dunes to the beach and have lunch in any of the clubs in Bloemendaal aan Zee ( around 15km round trip), especially when it is nice weather. This could be an alternative to cycling in the countryside around Amsterdam and leaving you more time to experience Amsterdam proper.

If you have special interests, I may be able to give some suggestions for Haarlem.

I emphatically agree that if you are in Haarlem, Corrie Ten Boom Haus is not to be missed. We were just there less than 2 weeks ago and CTB haus was the most impactful moment of our 11 day RS Belgium/Holland tour. More so than Anne Frank House. We did both.
Just a note: Haarlem and CTB Haus are not part of the RS tour (but it should be, in my opinion). We did that Post-tour.

BTW, the Van Gogh Museum is going to make you tired so I would definitely rethink the timing and go other than after a bike tour.

I see that you're staying at a B&B in Haarlem. We stayed at Carlton Square and loved their restaurant for dinner. Just throwing out an option in case you haven't made evening plans. The menu ranges from burgers to a Chef surprise 3 or 4 course menu. The service was incredible. 5 stars, IMO.

Check, but Corrie ten Boom house fills up very far in advance. I got my June tickets last September.

Maybe you could bike from Haarlem? I always wanted to, but have yet to find the time. Have a great trip!

pbscd,
Yes, ressies can fill quickly but they are free so people often just don't show up bc they weren't out any money thus making stand-by at CTB haus very likely to work out, especially for the first tour of the day. We were at 10 am and they allowed around 15 mins for people to show for their slotted time but when they didn't show 2 couples were allowed to join that had been waiting stand by. Of course, that may not always happen but not having a ticket shouldn't be a reason not to try, IMO. The guide said there are no shows throughout the day.

I was in Amsterdam and Haarlem 2 weeks ago. I agree with the advice you have been given so far. I just wanted to add that for our 10 am Corrie Ten Boom House tour, a non-ticketed "standby" couple was allowed to join the tour because there were two ticketed people who "no showed."

Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions. I checked the Ten Boom House and reservations are booked for all the English tours. We will likely just enjoy the sights, shops and food in Haarlem. Thanks for confirming that visiting the Van Gogh Museum after a 4-hour bike ride is not a good idea. I'll plan to book it for the following morning instead. I also appreciate the links to other travelers' reports of their recent trips. This forum has always been very helpful for all my trips to Europe. I'm on the Rick Steves Facebook page as well and sometimes, those posts receive hundreds of comments, which tend to be overwhelming. The travelers on this forum always have thoughtful suggestions. Thanks again!

If you are unfamiliar with Indonesian food, try De Lachende Javaan. There are strong culinary ties with Indonesia, a former Dutch colony, offering a great opportunity to try this cuisine.

For bars, I would suggest De Vijfhoek of Het Kantoortje, although beer aficionados do like to visit the Jopenkerk or Uiltje Bar (two brewery tasting rooms).

If cheese fondue is your thing, definitely go to In ‘t Goede Uur.

There a few more low key places and high end restaurants I could suggest, if you’re interested.

Thank you Barney_NL for the restaurant recommendations! I was actually looking at that Indonesian restaurant you mentioned as I would like to enjoy a rijksttafel. I actually love Malaysian and Thai food as I'm originally from Malaysia, so Indonesian food would be awesome. I was trying to decide between some restaurants in Amsterdam (Sampurna maybe) or De Lachende Javaan in Haarlem that you recommended. I'm leaning towards De Lachende Javaan for dinner after our bike ride.

I appreciate the bar recommendations as well. Where would you recommend for our first night of dinner in Haarlem after we arrive on day 1? Thank you!

The Rendang is really good and how spicy it is depends on the auntie in the kitchen. https://www.cafebruxelles.nl/ is cheap and cheerful and frequented by mainly locals. https://cafecolette.nl/ is a French bistro at the Oude Groenmarkt. The Oude Groenmarkt and surroundings is where most of the restaurants are. Metzo in the Warmoestraat and Brick in the Vijfhoek neighborhood could also be options to explore. The Dakkas in the evening has some beautiful views over Haarlem.
