Itinerary feeback please

I have planned this trip for our school group. Four teens, each with a parent, and myself. I am trying to get the most out of our I Amsterdam Passes. But folks are worried there isn’t enough nature in the itinerary. And I am worried I didn’t give enough time to get from point a to point b and still be able to enjoy where we are. Can someone who knows the area well give me feed back on this itinerary?

TRAVEL DAY

You’ve previously asked about whether or not you should rent a car or take public transport. Everyone here advised you to take public transport, but you seem to have decided to go with a car? Is there a reason for it? I ask this because you’re planning to park your car in P+R locations which means you’ll still need to take public transport anyway. The use of P+R’s will take considerable time out of your already packed schedule.
I can explain this best by giving you an example. If you were to take the train from Haarlem to Amsterdam and walk to the Anne Frank house, it would only take 40 minutes. Your plan to drive to a P+R and take the metro from there plus walk, will take almost twice as long; 30 minutes driving time to reach the P+R, plus 15 minutes to find a spot, walk to the metro and but your tickets, plus another 7 minutes for the metro ride to Rokin and lastly plus 20 minutes to walk from the Rokin metro station to the Anne Frank house.
There are definitely parts of the Netherlands where a car can be helpful, but not in the densely populated area of our country that you plan to visit.

I agree that having a car is likely going to add a lot of extra travel time to an already very short trip. Plus with 9 people you're also going to need an enormous vehicle (hopefully you can rent one - they're hard to come by). A bigger vehicle is also going to be a challenge to park in any kind of lot. I don't recall where your apartment is located but I'm confident transit options exist.

Also your first day doesn't give much leeway for jet lag, especially for teens who may have never experienced jet lag. I also don't quite understand why you rent a car first, take to park and ride, and then get on the metro with your luggage and go to a storage point. I'd flip the order and store your bags at the airport, take the train from the airport to Centraal, then return to airport to fetch your bags and rent the car after your activities there.

I appreciate you have a lot of moving parts and people and that your trip is coming quickly. Best of luck to you!

Four teens, each with a parent, and myself.

sorry, is that 9 full sized people in a car plus luggage?

I'm trying to work out where your Amsterdam apartment is which is 30 minutes drive from Haarlem, and an hour of peak rush hour traffic from Amsterdam Tower??

Or have I got your timings wrong?

Are you getting 2 or 3 cars?

You have pretty early starts and tightly packed agendas for 4 teens on vacation. Do you know the teens (and their parents) well enough to know that none of them will need dynamite to get out of bed and / or out of the bathroom early in the morning?

If you pull this off as you have it laid out you will have done a great thing for all 8 that you're taking with you.

are you aware of Dutch driving? Do you know of day / night speed limits, and the over all slow nature of driving in the Randstad?

Do consider petrol and parking costs… petrol is between 2-2.30 euro per liter and the parkings selected are not the cheapest ones… public transport may be the cheapest and maybe even fastest options.

Personally, I would leave more time for lunch and dinner…

We decided to go with a car since it is a 30 minute bus ride to Leiden where we’d catch the train to other places. I am figuring on the cars saving us some time, some standing, and maybe some money. Nine people on the most expensive (or second most depending on who you ask) public transportation was going to add up. You should have seen what they wanted me to put on the itinerary before I pared it down! I have driven many times in Europe, including The Netherlands. This isn't a vacation for the teens, it is a 10 day field trip for school.

Also we are renting 2 cars, and the packing requirements are carryon only. Personal item only if they can swing it.

I wasn’t able to deduce the day you are planning to come to Haarlem. Most museums are closed on Mondays and the Bavo on the Grote Markt is closed on Sundays.

Do consider de Raaks or Houtplein parkings. They are cheaper and have more spaces. The Raaks is not much further walking.

Mondays are tricky as many restaurants may be closed. Booking a table in the weekends is recommended, especially with large groups, but I guess you have already looked what is available..
