Ibis Hotel @ Amsterdam airport or Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel?

We were thinking of staying 2 nights at the Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel, but are having second thoughts for two reasons: I get the impression from reviews that the Wiechmann rooms are not well maintained (in addition no elevator), and people are paying $$$ for the location. The view from the room will be nice, but we'll be outside the room for most of the day. The taxes are almost 24% on top of the room price. Also, apparently they are very rigid about check in time @ 3 pm. Our flight arrives @ 9 am in Amsterdam, and we need a room to freshen up and maybe have a short nap, since we had to get to Zurich airport @ 5 am for a 7 am flight to Amsterdam.

The alternative is one of the Ibis Hotels near the airport, which are almost half price compared to the Wiechmann. I've used Ibis Hotels in other countries, and they charge you a bit extra for early check-in, assuming a room is available. Of course we would have to take the Sprinter train from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal. Does this sound like a good idea? Are there any hotels just outside Amsterdam where it is easy to get a train connection to Amsterdam Centraal, but you're not paying big bucks?

We will be in Amsterdam for 2 days and 2 nights.

It would help to know why it’s either the Wiechman or an IBIS at the airport. There are lots of hotels all over central Amsterdam, why aren’t these an option?
When you compare hotels, you should take into account that the IBIS hotels aren’t exactly at the airport, but rather in the general area. In order to get from the hotel to central Amsterdam you would first need to take a shuttle bus to the airport and then a train or bus into the city.
It would also be helpful to know when you’ll be here as hotel prices in Amsterdam are very date dependent.

@Dutch_traveler: The Wiechmann Hotel was actually the least expensive for a stay in mid-July, at least that's what I saw on Booking.com. I went through a list of Amsterdam hotels that were recommended on the EarthTrekkers website.

If you have any recommendations for reasonably $$$ hotels in Central Amsterdam, I'm happy to check them out. You are right, we'll need to take a shuttle from Ibis to airport first and then the train.

Reasonable means different things to different people. In order to get meaningful advice, you need to post a budget in Euros.

If you are willing to take a bus and then a train into Amsterdam, would you also be willing to take a very quick train one stop, or a tram, from Sloterdijk station? There is a Holiday Inn Express right there...

@Dutch_traveler: Our budget is about 100 Euro per person/per night

@Nigel: Thanks for suggesting the Sloterdijk Holiday Inn Express, will check it out.

@Mary: The NH Hotels won't fit our budget, but thanks for the suggestion!

We don't have to stay at a Ibis hotel, but noticed there are some in Amsterdam itself.

Would you consider staying in Haarlem? It's an easy train ride to Amsterdam, and hotels are much cheaper.
Have a great trip!

@Pat: We may visit Haarlem, but hotels in Sloterdijk seem to be about the same cost as Haarlem.

@Nigel: I like the location of the Sloterdijk Holiday Inn Express and it fits our budget, so most likely that's where we will be.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Sloterdijk several times. It is well located, an easy 15 minutes or so from the airport, 5 minutes into Centraal, plus there is a tram/bus station right there as well. Places like Haarlem, Leiden and beyond can be reached, without going to Centraal first, from Sloterdijk.

Their check in is flexible, a few times I have gotten a room with a mid-morning arrival...but that is based on availability and I still have decent status with IHG. If getting a room at ~10:00 AM is "non-negotiable" then I would contact them first, not expect it. They of course will have no idea if they will be sold out the night before you show up, meaning housekeeping will need time to get rooms ready.

There is an Ibis on the edge of Centraal station, plus several others in the city at various price points. I trust Ibis to do all the essentials without charm but with efficiency and dependability.

@Paul: we are getting a couple of rooms at the Sloterdijk Holiday Inn Express. I know there no guarantees of being able to check-in early, but even if we can get one room on arrival, that'll be better than nothing. Let's see.

I looked at the Ibis Hotels near Centraal, but they were $$$ more. The Holiday Inn Express with its quick connection to Centraal should work out great!
