What 3 or 4 star smaller or boutique hotels would you recommend in central Haarlem and hopefully on or near a canal. Not really interested in chain hotels and will be walking, no car, from the central train station, or taking a taxi. We will be using it as a home base for 3 or 4 nights and traveling the region by train or bus. Thank you for any recommendations.

Haarlem is our preferred stay. However, canals are minimal in that area - just one a bit to the east. We have stayed several times in the Hotel Amadeus. It is over a restaurant on the square - Grote Markt. Also have stayed in the Ambassador City Centre Hotel just behind the Grote Kerk -- big cathedral. We find Haarlem to be more relaxing after an intense day in Amsterdam. A couple of nice restaurants across the square from the hotel.

Thanks for your suggestions as just beginning to explore Haarlem options. Does anyone have an opinion of ML Hotel, Amrath Grand Hotel Frans Hals, or Brasss Haarlem? I realize these may be larger and more expensive, but interested if any opinions. Thanks.

Hubby stayed at the ML several days and loved it. We're returning there in May. He also said that the food at the ML restaurant was wonderful.
