Hotel Recommendation: 24 Hours in Amsterdam

Our family will have a 24-hour layover in Amsterdam. We intend to hit the highlights: Anne Frank House, canal tour. We’d appreciate a great hotel recommendation to get the most out of our short visit! (Plus any other must-dos!) Thanks so much in advance!

  • Family = 2 adults + 2 teen daughters ** Traveling from Milan, Italy en route home to Seattle in mid-April; flight changes resulted in an overnight, mid-afternoon to mid-afternoon.

Thank you!!

Whether your layover is between flights or between train rides, I suggest one of the big hotels near Centraal Station, like the Ibis, simply for the convenience. You don't have time to lug your stuff to and from some charming canalside hotel in a quiet neighborhood. There's an easy train between the airport and Centraal. Tram lines from Centraal serve any local destination you might choose. You'll need a timed entry for the Anne Frank house. Canal boat rides are plentiful and a good way to see a lot of city in a short time.

There would lots of other "must-dos" if you had a longer visit, and maybe your 24-hour "hit" will tempt you into a longer one later. I've been to Amsterdam twice and have yet to visit the Anne Frank house, for me the art museums are the biggest draw. But the city has enough to interest everyone.

If the weather is cooperative rent bikes. Great way to see a lot of the city. Lots of protected bike lanes and easy peddling .

hey hey melissa
you don't say when this trip is, how many is "our family", what hours are the 24, what your budget is in euros, how many beds or is sofa bed okay, one or two hotel rooms? remember that hotel check in is usually after 2-4pm, check out 10-11am, where are putting your luggage?
anne frank's tickets need to be booked online with date and time slots. (annefrank.org) decide if only museum or museum/intro program, tickets are available to book for 30 days, then next month pops up. canal cruises are all over, depending on what cruise you want.

are you catching a train or plane after 24 hours, give yourself time to transfer to station or airport. your time is short, stay near transportation area, if you're traveling during busy vacation times it will be busy and crowded. been 2 times to amsterdam, stayed in an apt with 4 of us friends for 6 nights, houseboat for 5 nights with four best friends.

With limited time, one way to “hit the highlights”
is by boat. Our B & B host recommended Stromma canal cruise. We were pleased. https://www.stromma.com/en-nl/amsterdam/ It was hop on hop off. It was a wonderful way to see Amsterdam from the water. We were in Amsterdam 5 nights and also enjoyed walking everywhere. Anne Frank House, and all the museums are wonderful. We also enjoyed Vondelpark very much. Enjoy your planning.

Stay in the Central Canal area at Hotel l’Ambassade right on the pretty Herengracht Canal to get a real Amsterdam experience.
