Hotel Clemens vs DeWare Jacob

Hotel Clemens is closer to city center and seems to be a busier neighborhood. DeWare Jacob is close to Vondel park and in a quieter neighborhood. Anyone recommend one over the other? Thank you.

Is this your first trip to Amsterdam? What are your thoughts on what you'll want to see?

I stayed at De Ware Jacob last April on the recommendation of a forum friend and enjoyed it. I've been to Amsterdam a number of times and this stay was focused on seeing the Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, going to the Van Gogh Museum and meeting a friend for lunch. The neighborhood was perfect for that. The hotel is quite nice although for 2 days the elevator was out - one of my touring days and the day that I left. A housekeeper saw me head for the stairs with my suitcase when I was leaving and rushed to take it out of my hand and zip down the stairs with it. The stairs are very Dutch, lol...steep above the 1st floor and narrow treads. I could have managed but she made it easier! There are plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood that are patronized by the folks who live there.

In previous stays I've also stayed with a tour group near Vondelpark but about a half mile further out. My first stay back in the dark ages was a canal-side hotel so don't need to do that. In between I've stayed in a number of places around town. The Museum district suits me but it may not a first-timer. The trams are very easy to use in Amsterdam!

I have not stayed at Hotel Clemens.

I stayed at Hotel Clemens in September 2022 and once in September 1972.

Our room was small but certainly adequate. Breakfast was fantastic. The staff was terrific. The location is unbeatable, just across from Westerkerk and Anne Frank House.

The street that it is on is busy but you can step outside and get on a tram and Dam Square is nearby. The building the hotel is in is one of the most interesting in Amsterdam, in my opinion.
