Has anyone home-based in the wooded / coastal area of Bergen or Bergen Ann Zee? The natural areas look so inviting, but it's a 50 commute to Amsterdam. We do like a walk in the woods or on the beach, and will also hit the main attractions of the city and the windmills. This is our first trip to the Netherlands, so convenience is good, but we are also comfortable with public transit.

There is a very nice beach town close to Amsterdam : ZANDVOORT . By train from Amsterdam you will pass Haarlem so on the way to Zandvoort (or back) you could spend some time in Haarlem also.

Just make sure you avoid Zanvoort the first weekend of May, as that will mark the return of the F1 Dutch Grand Prix for the first time in 35 years and the place will be a madhouse.
