Holland pass vs Museumkaart

Rick's book seems to suggest against the Holland pass. However if we plan to visit the two top museums in Amsterdam (VG and Rijksmuseum), Keukenhof, Hermitage, and take the canal tour. The large Holland pass seems to offer better value, which also includes the train ticket from airport and 24 hr travel card.

But I wonder if Holland pass is more troublesome to use, for example you need to exchange for the ticket when using the pass. However for the two most popular sites (VG and Rijksmuseum), it seems Holland pass also offers the line skipping benefit, or am I missing something?

Has anyone used the Holland pass?

I just bought three large Holland passes online that allow for the redemption of three gold admissions and three silver admissions. Just to mention, the 24 hr travel card for use on trains throughout the Netherlands is not included with the Holland pass, it is an additional EUR19. Rick's guide really pushes the Museumkaart and does not go into much detail about the Holland pass, only stating that it is not worth it. I disagree.

I would think that the Holland pass is less troublesome to use. You can buy it online by credit card before leaving at hollandpass.com and specify a pick-up point at either GWK Travelex at Schiphol or Centraal Station on the date of your choosing. Then when you start touring, all you have to do is turn in the gold or silver pass (depending on the attraction) instead of getting out your wallet and paying cash.

Most of the main museums covered under the Museumkaart are also covered by the Holland Pass. However, the Holland Pass includes additional non-museum attractions that are appealing such as the Heineken Experience, the Artis Royal Zoo and admission to the House of Bols Cocktail and Genever Experience just to mention a few. And even after you have used up all of your gold and silver admissions, you can still use the Holland pass to get discounts on any additional museums or attractions you want to see. Plus you get a free rail ticket from Schiphol to Centraal station and your choice of a 24-hour Amsterdam hop-on, hop-off tour bus ticket or a 1 hour canal cruise. And if you want, you can decline the airport rail ticket and pay EUR2.50 less for the large pass. I did the math and found it is easy to save EUR30-35 compared to walking up and paying full price admissions depending on what you choose to see.

One disadvantage I can see is that they only allow you to use the Holland pass for one Rijksmuseum admission. So you have to be careful and be sure to save the gold voucher that explicitly states that it is the one to use for the Rijksmseum (and not use it at another gold venue). This is not really a problem for me as I do not plan to visit any museum multiple times. In addition, the train ticket options are set in stone once you choose a date and you have to go through added inconveniences of adding names and dates of birth before printing out the E-ticket. If for example you choose the Schiphol ticket or the optional EUR19 all day Netherlands train pass and then you end up not being able to go on the specified date you chose, then you are out of luck. I am the kind of person that prefers to simplify things by keeping the transportation element out of the Holland pass.

It should be a non-hassle experience using the pass and getting a good value. I will let you know how it went when I return from my trip.

Thank you Greg for confirming it, I also did the math and found Holland pass can save at least 20 euros per person for the sites we plan to visit. For the 24 hour travel card, I was referring to the unlimited 24 hour transportation card in Amsterdam that you can use the silver ticket to exchange which is otherwise 7.5 euro, as in the link below. Of course there may be other things to use the silver ticket for better value depending on what people choose to do.

You mentioned a good point that some people prefer the Museumkaat because they plan to visit the museum more than once. We have just a few days there and don't plan to so. I was thinking to buy the Holland pass at GWK Travelex when arriving at the airport, so that I can also clarify a few things on how to use the pass.

The Museumkaart is good for one year, and covers many museums in the whole country, not just in Amsterdam. If you're only going to Amsterdam and only for a few days, these differences will not matter to you, but if you are seeing other places in the Netherlands, it's a great saving.

The Museumkaart is very easy to use - you just buy it at your first sight (any place except biggies like the Rijskmuseum and the Van Gogh museum should have short lines), then show it at the others, where they scan it and you're in.

I did not use the Holland Pass so I have no basis for comparison.

I just returned from my trip to Amsterdam and am satisfied with my experience using the Holland Pass. When I arrived at Schiphol Airport Plaza, I went to GWK Travelex office to pick up the passes on the date that I specified in the online purchase. I presented a copy of the confirmation email to the employee. She had me sign the copy and then presented our three plastic Holland pass cards along with the seven paper vouchers for each person (three silver, three gold and one tour ticket). We were also given two 300-page tour guides that listed every museum, attraction, restaurant and transportation option that was covered by the Holland Pass. It is very informative for planning purposes. The Rijksmuseum required exchanging the gold voucher for a museum ticket but allowed us to bypass the ticket purchase queue. As for the other attractions, some just accepted the silver or gold voucher while other required exchanging them for an actual ticket. It just depends on the attraction.

All three of us used the three gold, three silver and one tour ticket for the same things and utilized the plastic discount card for the same discounts. So the per-person breakdown is:

Tour Ticket: Lovers 1 Hour Canal Cruise €16
Silver Ticket 1: House of Bols, the Cocktail & Genever Experience €14.50
Silver Ticket 2: Castle Muiderslot €12.50
Silver Ticket 3: Royal Delft Experience (City of Delft) €12.50
Gold Ticket 1: Rijksmuseum €17.50
Gold Ticket 2: Artis Royal Zoo €19.95
Gold Ticket 3: De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam €10.00
Card Discount: €1.50 -Museum Our Lord in the Attic (25% off €6.00 admission)
Card Discount: €1.50 - Volendam-Marken Express Ferry (20% off €7.50 one-way fare)
Card Discount: €3.70 – Restaurant De Roode Leeuw (10% off food)
Card Discount: €2.00 -Dutch Resistance Museum (20% off €10.00 admission)

Total Admissions Covered and Discounts (above): €111.65

Total Paid for Holland Pass: €79.50

Savings: €32.15
