Our hotel is very close to a Tram stop. Am wondering how easy it is to take luggage on the Tram from the Central Station. Or would it be easier to take a cab. There will be 4 in our party. Thanks for your assistance!
Never a problem if packing light.
Assuming you are talking about Amsterdam...there will be plenty of room on the tram. If I remember correctly, I believe there were only 1 or 2 steps up into the tram.
A tram is like a city bus - there will be floor space for your luggage but it's up to you to handle it and keep it with you. Some trams in Amsterdam still have quite high floors, which makes getting aboard awkward if you have very heavy luggage. Also beware of thieves in crowded trams in the city centre.
Amsterdam has an excellent transit system. We took all our luggage and even a wheelchair on the tram from the central station to our hotel with no problem. It was a fun introduction to the city. How long will you be in Amsterdam? If you want a multiday transit pass, there is a transit office right across from the central station that sells passes. We bought a 7 day pass and definitely got our money's worth.
I like taking the tram if it's just me traveling on my own. I pack light (e.g., 1 carry-on bag), and Centraal is the starting point for many tram lines. However, depending what time of day you are arriving, trams can get packed pretty quick during rush hour so you may need to prepare yourselves to squeeze your way through a crowded tram with your suitcase to get out at your stop. With 4 of you plus suitcases, it may be easier to spend the extra money and catch a taxi to your hotel. Also, if you are coming into Centraal from the airport, don't forget to check where your hotel is in relation to the Connexxion Bus. A lot of visitors aren't aware that there is a bus that stops at multiple points in the city and easily serves many hotels located near Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein - it costs just 5 Euro per person to get to/from the airport.
