Half day in Amsterdam - Ideas??

We're on a river boat cruise in early May ending in Amsterdam. In the morning, there is an organised tour but the afternoon of the final day is free.

I have spent some time in Amsterdam before and am looking for something novel to do/see. We've been to the Van Gogh museum and I'm not sure I fancy the Rijksmuseum (sorry - old masters not really my thing). Does anyone have any ideas? Somewhere convenient to get to by public transport from the river cruise docking area (about 1/2 to 3/4 mile from central Station) would be especially great.

There is lots to see and do in Amsterdam, but without knowing what your interests are, what you’ve already done in Amsterdam and what’s included in your morning tour, it’s a bit difficult to advise you. Sharing a bit more information helps us help you better.

The morning trip is to the flower market. We’ve previously done canal tours, visited the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank’s house (arguably the most depressing place I’ve ever been) and seen diamond cutting.

We tend to like museums, great houses etc but would be interested in gardens or attractive parks too. We’re not into hiking or cycling. I was thinking of something within Amsterdam rather than, say, a train ride away (although I do know that Dutch trains are frequent and reliable).

I hope the morning trip is to a bit more than just the Flower market. The flower market in Amsterdam is nothing but a row of shops selling flowers, mouldy flower bulbs and tacky souvenirs. It takes all of 5 minutes to see, so I can’t imagine a tour to that could take all morning. Or do you mean the flower auction in Aalsmeer?

It would help to know how much time you have to spend. Early May could still be a great time to see the tulips and the Keukenhof, but that would take at least 4 to 5 hours.

Sorry, I did mean the auction. We’ll be going to the Keukenhof on another day.

I don’t know exactly have long we’ll have. I’d guess from about noon or 1pm onwards. Last year, we had a similar bit of free time and went to the Van Gogh museum which fitted in very well.

Perhaps the Dutch Resistance Museum?

The church in the attic? - old house, church built up in the attic. Might suit your interests.

The botanical garden in Amsterdam is nice. There is also a cat museum if that is your thing. We did both. The cat museum does not take long at all and is just very quirky. I would only do it if you are going past there and have the time.
