Haarlem Hotel with Twin Beds

I love Haarlem, and enjoyed our last hotel, Boutique Staats.

However, this trip I'll be going with a single girl friend, and we want to share a room, but with separate beds, with no one having a sofa bed. This is for spring, 2026, and I'm not seeing too much with twin beds, as I do my research on booking.com. Many options indicate Queen beds, that do not pull apart. Maybe I'm too early. Hotel Boutique Staats only has queen beds, and charges extra for more blankets.
Price range around 300€, with breakfast, lenient cancelation policy. I just thought suites would have extra beads, but no such luck. I do like great bed linens and fun decor.
In the wise and experienced RS universe, can you all help us?
Thanks to all!

FWIW, I've not stayed in Haarlem, but these are some of the recommended hotels from my RS Amsterdam book (probably 2022 era):

ML Hotel
Brasss Haarlem
Haarlem Hotelsuites
Hotel Lion D'Or
Ambassador City Centre Hotel
Hotel Joops
Hotel Malts
Hotel Amadeus

A quick scan of Booking for random dates in April showed several of these have twin bed option. But it could definitely depend on your specific travel dates - if in April, things could be booked for tulips and Kings Day.

Definitely check out Hotel Malts…while I didn’t stay in a double room, I’m almost positive they have them. The hotel is very affordable and a great value. Way nicer than I expected for the price I paid. Plus the owners are super nice and the breakfast is fantastic.

CL and Maggie, thanks.
I'm looking for lodging with close to a 9.0 rating on booking.com.
I'm working thru these listings slowly, as the hotels direct websites are a bit wonky.
Hotel lion d'Or is getting a bit worn out, per reports here. Sometimes the RS recommendations get a bit stale over the years. It's also on a busy, noisy street.
Some of the lodgings around Grote Market report street noise, especially on the weekends.
Hotel Malts is confusing, as folks refer to it as a two-star hotel, and RS lists it as $$, but it has 9.4 rating on booking.com. However, its website is wonky, so I can't figure out the cancelation policy. Perhaps it's too early for spring inquiries.
I really want the Boutique Staats, as it met all my needs last time, but it doesn't offer two beds.
Seems too early for booking the Brasss Haarlem, so I sent an email.
Hotel Amadeus only has a 7.2 on booking.com, folks reports street noise, and with the spring Fun Fair carnival right outside, will be really noisy.
Thanks for all the feedback.

Hotel Malts is confusing, as folks refer to it as a two-star hotel,
and RS lists it as $$, but it has 9.4 rating on booking.com.

To clarify, the ratings in RS books are not a quality rating - they only reflect the price of a property. The scale is below, the dollar amounts that qualify for each category are updated with each version of the guidebook:

$$$$ = splurge
$$$ = pricier
$$ = moderate
$ = budget
¢ = backpacker

I think each country has a slightly different approach to a star rating system and I don't know how they do it in Netherlands. Booking ratings are from people who have actually stayed at a property, but they're still subjective (though I've found them pretty reliable).

Are you sure you’re on the correct website? Their website works perfectly fine, at least from the Netherlands, and their cancellation policy is stated right there on the home page https://maltshotel.nl/?lang=en
If you click on the “Service” tab of the website menu, the cancellation policy is explained in much more detail https://maltshotel.nl/service/?lang=en

The room types and bed types are also clearly mentioned on their website. They have several types of rooms and in the room description of most room types it says “ On request we can move the beds to 2 seperate beds/twin bed.”

I have no personal experience with this hotel, but based on their website, their ratings and location I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there myself.

Joe and Dutch traveler, thanks, I think my I-Pad is just not cooperating with these websites. I appreciate the links you both provided, because I didn't see those, especially once I put in sample dates.

I know the RS $$ symbols have nothing to do with the European hotel star rating systems, but I found it odd that a reasonably - priced hotel would have such a high booking.com rating. Generally high ratings come with higher rates.

Thanks again to all for your time and energy for the attachments.

Frustrating, as I found some really cute, funky boutique lodgings, but all with queen beds. I had never thought about this issue before.

Hi Pat. I have a few thoughts. Could you splurge and get 2 rooms for this part of your trip? You know I didn’t love Hotel Lion D'Or, but it wasn’t horrible if it meets your needs with the 2 beds. I know you love Haarlem, but have you considered a different location as a home base? You could still visit Haarlem.

Good luck!!

Hi Pat, no offense intended, I included the RS info for people reading the thread who might not know what the $$ symbols mean.

booking.com rating. Generally high ratings come with higher rates.

I have found plenty of reasonably priced hotels rated very highly on Booking, but they're usually booked solid. Hopefully you're lucky enough to find one of those unicorns that suits your situation.

I'll keep looking, as I have lots of time-hopefully, (as it's during Tulip season. ) Also waiting for spring airline rates to go down a bit. I'm an experienced traveler, and as this is a return trip, I thought this would be easy. A new challenge is always fun, however.
In one , Hotel ML, the twin beds are in their tiniest budget room, like it would be for kids.
Carrie, more Belgium chocolate will be coming my way (smile emoji).
CL, thank again, and for all your contributions here.
Maybe we will get separate rooms in the middle of the trip, as a break from each other. I've known this gal thirty years, have done short trips together, but this will be the true test! (Wink emoji)

Pat, it would help people help you if you post the dates you want to stay in the area. Hotel prices in that part of our country are very date dependent During the tulip season, room rates can easily triple.
You also need to take into account that from Jan 1, 2026 the VAT percentage on accommodation will increase from 9 to 21%. You need to double check that the hotel has adjusted their rates to reflect the correct VAT %.
Which VAT % has to be applied is determined by when your stay is, not when you booked and/or paid for it. So even if you book now, you’ll still need to pay 21% VAT if your stay is in 2026.

Have you considered an AirBnB? Maybe renting an apartment/house could be an alternative.

Barney, no apartment for me, as I like those freshly - baked Dutch breads each morning at breakfast!
Dutch Traveler, I was in the country in 2024 for Tulip Season, so I know the prices are higher, AND the USD is much weaker this time, but I do love visiting your country. Great point, many hotels may not have calculated the new tax rate, so haven't posted 2026 rates yet.
Thanks to all for taking the time to help us out!

Plenty of bakeries or places that serve breakfast in the city center.that open up early in case you have to change your mind. Fresh bread has actually become quite a thing at the moment, especially sourdough bread. I do get it is a different experience though being in a hotel. Hope you find something to allow me to welcome you back to my city.
